Gavin Hunt Reflects on Stellenbosch Victory as Emotional Les Grobler Tribute Takes Centre Stage

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt reflected on his side’s performance after securing a 2-0 victory over Durban City in the Carling Knockout on Wednesday night, with the occasion also marked by a heartwarming tribute to the late Les Grobler.

The match, played at Chatsworth Stadium, saw Hunt come up against his former side as Stellenbosch continued their Carling Knockout campaign with an important victory.

For Hunt, the result offered an opportunity to assess his team’s performance against familiar opposition, while the post-match media engagement also provided a moment to remember Grobler, whose passing has prompted tributes within South African football.

Stellenbosch entered the encounter looking to advance in the competition, knowing that knockout football leaves little room for mistakes. Their 2-0 triumph over Durban City ensured they came away with the result they wanted.

Facing a former club added another layer of interest to the contest for Hunt, who was tasked with guiding Stellenbosch through a challenging fixture at Chatsworth Stadium.

The victory will provide encouragement for the team as they look to build momentum in the Carling Knockout. Winning by two goals without conceding also gave Stellenbosch a positive outcome on the night.

However, Hunt’s post-match reflections were not limited to the scoreline, with the media session also featuring a touching tribute to Grobler.

The tribute to Grobler brought an emotional dimension to the post-match proceedings, highlighting the personal connections and memories that remain an important part of South African football.

While the game itself centred on competition and the pursuit of silverware, the moment of remembrance offered a reminder that football extends beyond results, rivalries and trophies.

Grobler’s tribute formed a significant part of the occasion, giving the post-match conversation a more personal tone alongside Hunt’s assessment of Stellenbosch’s performance.

With the 2-0 win over Durban City secured, Stellenbosch will look to carry the confidence gained from the result into their next assignment.

For Hunt, maintaining consistency and ensuring his players continue to respond to the demands of knockout football will be important as the competition progresses.

The victory also adds another talking point to Stellenbosch’s Carling Knockout journey, while the tribute to Grobler ensured Wednesday night was remembered for more than the action on the pitch.
