A senior aide to former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed suggestions that the alleged attempt to poison the politician in prison was fabricated.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, insisted that neither he nor Mr Wontumi had any reason to invent such a story.
He stressed that the circumstances surrounding the allegation would become clearer after investigations are completed.
“Until the investigation is completed, we won’t know the motive behind it,” he said.
Responding to suggestions that the allegation was merely a strategy, Dr Boakye-Danquah rejected the claim, insisting that his credibility and that of the former NPP regional chairman should not be questioned.
“It is not true; this is merely a strategy to drive Wontumi’s release. Everyone in Ghana knows me, Palgrave, to be truthful and trustworthy, and the same applies to Chairman Wontumi. We have no reason to fabricate or make up this story,” he stated.
He questioned what they stood to gain from making such an allegation, arguing that the matter should be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
“What do we stand to gain? This is not an issue to trivialise or joke about,” he added.
Dr Boakye-Danquah further disclosed that the identities of the individuals allegedly involved had not been made known to him, but said he was closely following developments in the matter.
“The identities of the alleged culprits are not known. They have not been disclosed to us yet, but I am following the matter keenly,” he said.
The aide also expressed regret over Mr Wontumi’s incarceration at Nsawam Prison, saying he would have preferred that the politician had not been sent there in the first place.
“I really wish Chairman Wontumi hadn’t gone to Nsawam in the first place,” he said.
However, Dr Boakye-Danquah acknowledged that the legal process must be respected, adding that he could not interfere with it.
“But the law has to take its course, and I cannot interfere with that,” he stated.
