Tigray Conflict Intensifies Amid Sudan’s Tumultuous Civil War

Addis Ababa (WDN)** –** Fighting between the Ethiopian federal forces and TPLF troops has intensified over the past two days, with reports of military movements and skirmishes emerging from various parts of Tigray and areas near the Ethiopia-Sudan border.

In western Tigray, particularly in Wolqayt and along the Tekeze River, the TPLF has reportedly initiated troop movements, mobilizing a significant number of forces in the region. Reports indicate that heavy weaponry has been employed in some of the skirmishes, signaling that tensions between the two sides have escalated from minor clashes to the brink of major confrontations.

The Ethiopian government claims that nearly 300 TPLF fighters have surrendered to its forces in the Tekeze area. According to state media outlet Fana, these surrendered fighters were handed over to the Ethiopian military along with over 280 various types of weapons, ammunition, military equipment, and documents. It was also stated that some of the defectors included officers and commanders of various ranks.

However, the Ethiopian government’s claims and those from supportive media require independent verification, as reports from the Tigray conflict are often conveyed inconsistently by the opposing sides.

On another front, TPLF-supportive media have reported that their forces shot down or destroyed an uncrewed aerial vehicle being used by Ethiopian forces. If verified independently, this would represent a significant development in the ongoing Tigray conflict. So far, this claim has not received sufficient independent confirmation.

Battlefronts Merge

At the same time, the civil war in Sudan is increasingly encroaching on Ethiopia’s borders, particularly in the Blue Nile region. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allied forces are conducting attacks across various areas in the Blue Nile, while the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are working to defend critical roads and bases near the Ethiopian border.

A recent report from Sudan War Monitor indicated that the RSF released footage claiming to show Tigrayan fighters and leaders battling Sudanese forces. One individual featured in the video was identified by RSF as a TPLF officer. However, the report clarifies that independent verification of the individuals’ identities or their alleged TPLF affiliations is not possible.

This situation underscores the interconnectedness of the conflicts in Ethiopia and Sudan, particularly as Tigray shares a border with Sudan, while the Blue Nile region borders Ethiopia.

In recent days, the Sudanese government has directly accused Ethiopia of exploiting the ongoing conflict in Sudan to expand its influence or seize land along the border, including parts of Al-Fashaga and Blue Nile. Sudanese officials have also accused Ethiopia of orchestrating attacks launched by the RSF from its territory. Ethiopia has previously denied such allegations.

The tension has escalated to a point where Sudanese forces reported days ago that they had shot down drones targeting critical facilities close to the Ethiopian border. They claimed these drones were aimed at the Upper Atbara and Setit dams, as well as Khashm al-Girba.

Consequently, the regional conflict is taking on a multi-faceted battlefield appearance. On one side, clashes are occurring between Ethiopian forces and the TPLF, with Wolqayt and Tekeze highlighted as key areas of focus. On the other hand, the Sudan conflict expands into Blue Nile and towards the Ethiopian border, with the RSF and its allies striving to broaden the territory under their control.

Previous reports this month have also indicated significant military activity inside Ethiopia, particularly around Asosa, linking that region to the RSF’s fighting and the ongoing conflicts in Blue Nile.

All of these factors illustrate that the conflicts in Ethiopia and Sudan are increasingly intertwined, with the border between the two countries becoming a nexus for military activities involving Ethiopian forces, TPLF, RSF, and the Sudanese military.

The situation remains rapidly changing, making it crucial to distinguish claims from the fighting sides from information verified by independent sources. The continued escalation is deeply disappointing, as it suggests that a resolution to these conflicts is still far from reach.
