Former Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General Paul Valentino Phiri has secured temporary freedom after the court granted him bail on a K10 million cash bond.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shukrani Kumbani ordered Phiri to provide two sureties, each bonded at K20 million, and report to the police once every month.
Phiri was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on five counts linked to alleged abuse of office, dealing in terrorist property and contravening procurement procedures.
The ACB alleges that Phiri played a role in facilitating illegal arms trafficking to rebels in Sudan in June and July 2025.
Phiri appeared before court on Friday, a day after spending the night in custody following the postponement of his initial court appearance.
His lawyer, Powell Nkhutabasa, confirmed that the former MDF commander had been released on bail.
“The General was informed of the reasons why he had been detained. After that, we made an application for bail, and the court has since released him on bail,” Nkhutabasa said.
The court has scheduled the trial to start on November 12, 2026.
Phiri is accused by the ACB of offences arising from his alleged involvement in the arms trafficking matter, allegations which will now be tested through the court process.
