Death toll rises to 18 in tragic Carletonville tavern shooting

The quiet community of Carletonville has been rocked by tragedy following a shocking tavern shooting that has claimed the lives of 18 individuals, with at least 18 others injured.

ENCA reports that the attack took place on Saturday night at a popular local tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, West Rand District. As the community mourns, the police are racing against time to catch the perpetrators.

According to Gauteng police, only four of the deceased have been identified, consisting of two South African nationals and two nationals from Lesotho.

The grim incident unfolded shortly after 21:30 when a group of eight unidentified armed men stormed the tavern, first opening fire on patrons gathered outside before continuing their assault inside.

Eyewitnesses report that the attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, indiscriminately fired at victims, ultimately leading to a catastrophic loss of life.

Emergency Medical Services declared the 17 victims dead at the scene, predominantly comprising 13 males and four females. A further 15 individuals sustained gunshot injuries and have been swiftly transported to local medical facilities for urgent care.

The motive of this brazen attack remains unknown, leaving both authorities and community members in shock and disbelief.

The Gauteng Police Commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, has convened a multidisciplinary team of detectives to dive into this harrowing case, which encompasses 18 counts of murder, 18 counts of attempted murder, and additional charges for malicious damage to property and armed robbery.

In a bid to maintain safety and restore a sense of security, Operation Prosper has been mobilised to intensify security measures in the area while police continue their extensive manhunt for the suspects.

As the investigation unfolds, DA Merafong Mayoral Candidate Carlos Rebelo has voiced his concerns, urging residents to refrain from spreading speculation while the police conduct their inquiries. ‘Our responsibility cannot end with expressing condolences,’ Rebelo stated.

‘We need to understand how eight heavily armed men were allegedly able to carry out an attack of this magnitude in our community. I will closely follow the progress of this investigation and ensure that questions regarding police action and community safety are raised within the Gauteng Provincial Legislature,’

The police have called for anyone with pertinent information to assist in their investigation by reaching out through the CrimeStop Line at 08600 10111 or submitting tips anonymously via the MySAPSApp.

With no arrests made thus far, the hunt for justice continues as Carletonville grapples with its grief.
