Mofokeng Scores as Union Saint-Gilloise Rally to Beat Cercle Brugge

Bafana Bafana forward Relebohile Mofokeng scored a crucial goal as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise staged a strong comeback to defeat Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Sunday.

The match started poorly for the home side. Cercle Brugge took the lead through a penalty by Steve Ngoura in the 24th minute. Early in the second half, an own goal by Massiré Sylla put the visitors 2-0 up. At that stage, it looked like Cercle could pull off a surprise result against one of the league’s stronger teams.

Union Saint-Gilloise responded well after the break. They began to create more chances and slowly worked their way back into the game. Raul Florucz pulled one goal back, and Sylla then scored at the right end to level the scores. An own goal by Emmanuel Kakou soon after gave Union a 3-2 lead. The momentum had completely shifted.

With under 10 minutes remaining, Mofokeng made it 4-2. The 21-year-old South African finished clinically to put the result beyond doubt at that stage. He later set up Kevin Rodriguez, who added a fifth goal in stoppage time. The final score was 5-2 in favour of Union Saint-Gilloise.

Mofokeng played the full 90 minutes and stood out with both a goal and an assist. The Sharpville-born attacker has settled quickly since joining Union Saint-Gilloise from Orlando Pirates in July 2026. He has already contributed goals and assists in the league and European competitions this season.

The victory lifted Union Saint-Gilloise into third place in the standings. For South African fans, it was another positive sign that Mofokeng is adapting well to life in Europe and continuing to deliver for both club and country. His performance showed the same directness and confidence that made him a standout at Orlando Pirates.

Sunday’s result was a clear example of Union Saint-Gilloise’s fighting spirit. Trailing by two goals, they turned the game around completely and finished as comfortable winners. Mofokeng’s goal was a key moment in that recovery, and it gave Bafana Bafana supporters another reason to follow his progress closely in Belgium.
