Rivers Police Set October 31 Deadline For Tinted Glass Compliance

The Rivers State Police Command has set October 31, 2026, as the deadline for commercial vehicle operators in the State to comply with the prohibition on unauthorized tinted glasses.

The Command, in a statement by its spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, in Port Harcourt, said the deadline was extended following appeals by transport union leaders to enable affected vehicle owners regularise their vehicles.

The police had earlier directed commercial vehicle operators to desist from using unauthorized tinted glasses, urging those affected to utilize the extension to remove the glasses and bring their vehicles into compliance with the directive.

According to the Command, the extension is aimed at giving transport operators sufficient time to regularize their vehicles before the commencement of full enforcement of the prohibition.

It warned that appropriate enforcement measures and sanctions would be applied against individuals and vehicles found violating the directive from November 1, 2026.

The Command further directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, across the state to strictly enforce the prohibition and conduct detailed and lawful searches of vehicles suspected of having unauthorized tinted glasses.

It stressed that such searches must be carried out in accordance with the law and in response to prevailing security concerns and identified security lapses in the state.

The Command also reminded Area Commanders and DPOs that tricycles, popularly known as “keke”, are prohibited from operating on the roads after 10 p.m., directing them to ensure strict compliance with the restriction.

However, the police have cautioned its personnel against using the enforcement exercise as an opportunity to solicit or extort money from motorists and other road users.

The Command warned that any police personnel found soliciting money, extorting motorists or harassing members of the public during the exercise would be appropriately sanctioned.

It, therefore, urged transport operators and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with the police in its efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment across the State.

The Command advised members of the public with complaints or those requiring emergency assistance to contact the Police Complaint Response Unit.
