Jessica Motaung Drops Massive Announcement That Could Change Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns Forever

Jessica Motaung Praises COSAFA Leagues as ACA Alignment Gains Momentum

Jessica Motaung, Deputy Chairperson of the African Clubs Association (ACA), has praised the COSAFA region for its competitive football leagues and growing cooperation as clubs across Southern Africa work towards a stronger and more united continental football structure.

Motaung believes the region has significant potential to contribute to the development of African club football, pointing to the strength of its domestic competitions and the willingness of football stakeholders to work together in support of the ACA’s objectives.

Her comments highlight the importance of cooperation between leagues, clubs and football administrators as African football continues to pursue greater professionalism, improved competitiveness and sustainable growth.

The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) represents football associations across Southern Africa and plays an important role in developing the game through regional competitions and collaboration. Its member associations operate in different football environments but share common ambitions of improving standards and creating more opportunities for clubs and players.

For Motaung, the region’s competitive leagues provide an important foundation for achieving those ambitions. Strong domestic competitions help clubs develop talent, improve their organisational structures and prepare players for the demands of international football.

The growing alignment with the ACA is also significant because clubs remain central to the football ecosystem. Their financial stability, governance, infrastructure and commercial development all influence the overall quality of the game.

Motaung’s position within the ACA gives her an opportunity to encourage stronger links between Southern African clubs and their counterparts elsewhere on the continent. She represents the COSAFA region within the association’s leadership, alongside other football figures committed to advancing the interests of African clubs.

The ACA was launched in November 2023 to provide professional clubs with a collective platform to represent their interests and participate more actively in shaping the future of African football. Its objectives include strengthening governance, improving commercial opportunities and promoting closer cooperation between clubs and football authorities.

Fixture scheduling, league development and the financial sustainability of clubs remain important issues for African football. These matters are particularly relevant when teams compete domestically while also participating in demanding CAF interclub competitions.

For South African football, these discussions are important as clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns continue to pursue success in domestic and continental competitions.

Progress, however, will require more than competitive matches. Better administration, effective club licensing, improved infrastructure and stronger commercial partnerships are essential to ensuring that clubs can operate sustainably and compete at a higher level.

Motaung’s praise for COSAFA’s strong leagues and growing alignment with the ACA reflects a wider ambition to build a more connected African football community.

If the region’s clubs continue to work together, share expertise and embrace professional standards, they could strengthen their collective influence while creating better opportunities for players, supporters and investors.

The challenge now is to turn that cooperation into measurable progress. With the ACA providing a platform for dialogue and collaboration, COSAFA’s football community has an opportunity to help shape a stronger future for African club football.
