MZUZU, 24th October 2026 – Standard Bank PLC has reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal and child health through a donation of maternity and patient care equipment valued at MK40 million to Engucwini Health Centre under the Mother’s Fun Run initiative.
The donation, facilitated through the Bank’s long-standing partnership with Nation Publications Limited (NPL), forms part of Standard Bank’s commitment to driving sustainable development and improving the quality of life in the communities it serves.
Mzimba Branch Manager Robert Mwafulirwa said when he presented the donation at Katoto in Mzuzu that the initiative embodies the Bank’s purpose of “Driving Malawi’s Growth” by investing in healthcare interventions that strengthen communities and contribute to national development.
“At Standard Bank, we believe that meaningful growth begins with healthy and thriving communities. Through the Mother’s Fun Run initiative, we are supporting critical healthcare needs while contributing to improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes, ” he said.
Mwafulirwa said through the investment of K40 million, Standard Bank is building on its track record of partnering with the government and key stakeholders in contributing to national growth through taking care of the country’s health needs at the grassroots.
“Standard Bank is deeply invested in supporting the nation’s health sector, as demonstrated by our continued support of the Mother’s Fun Run over the past 11 years. We supported Bua Health Centre in Kasungu last year, and Makhuwira Health Centre in Chikwawa in 2024, which speaks to our consistency in helping to contribute to the goal of Safe Motherhood,” he added.
According to Nursing Officer at Engucwini, Gift Mlowoka, the facility faces numerous challenges in the delivery of antenatal and Postnatal care, labor and delivery services to women in surrounding communities.
“These gaps include lack of oxygen concentrators, beds, and an incinerator, which hinders proper disposal of biomedical wastes,” she said.
NPL Chief Executive Officer Mbumba Banda thanked Standard Bank for being a consistent corporate partner of the MFR for over a decade.
“Standard Bank’s unwavering support has turned the Mothers Fun Run into a catalyst for safer motherhood across Malawi,” she said.
