Thousands of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters dressed in red gathered at kaMaqhekeza Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday ahead of an eagerly anticipated address by party leader Julius Malema at the Tshela Thupa Rally.
According to the report, the crowd began arriving several hours before Malema was expected to take the stage. The stadium, which reportedly has a capacity of 15,000 people, was said to be filling rapidly by midday, with some late arrivals gathering on nearby grass banks and along access roads.
The strong turnout also created business opportunities for local vendors. Sellers around the stadium reportedly ran out of red berets before 10:00, leaving some supporters to improvise by purchasing fabric from a nearby taxi rank and turning it into red scarves.
EFF national spokesperson Sinawo Tambo confirmed that the rally formed part of the party’s intensified mobilisation campaign as it prepares for an important electoral period.
Speaking to journalists outside the stadium’s eastern entrance, Tambo highlighted the meaning behind the rally’s name and the importance of discipline among party members.
“Tshela Thupa means discipline, and today every fighter here understands why that instruction matters,” Tambo said.
Mpumalanga remains an important province for political parties seeking to strengthen their support ahead of local government elections. The EFF’s performance in the province during the 2021 elections reportedly varied across different wards, making grassroots campaigning an important part of its efforts to attract voters.
The choice of kaMaqhekeza, a township outside Nsikazi, was presented in the report as part of the party’s effort to connect with working-class communities facing economic challenges, including unemployment.
Among those attending was 67-year-old Nomvula Dlamini, a domestic worker from White River who reportedly arrived before sunrise. She carried a red flag she had sewn herself the previous evening as she waited for the proceedings to begin.
As the day progressed, supporters continued waiting for Malema’s arrival, with many remaining in the stadium despite the fading daylight. The report stated that his motorcade had yet to arrive as evening approached.
The rally’s ultimate significance will depend on whether the gathering translates into stronger voter support when ballots are cast. While the reported turnout points to enthusiasm among those present, attendance alone cannot establish how the EFF will perform in the elections.
For now, the Tshela Thupa Rally represents another opportunity for the party to mobilise its supporters, communicate its political message and strengthen its presence in Mpumalanga ahead of the upcoming electoral contest.
