National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) Chief Executive Officer Rhoda Gadama Misomali has urged Christian youth to translate their faith into practical action by developing their character, skills and leadership abilities.
Gadama was speaking on Thursday during the opening of the 2026 National Catholic Youth Conference at St Joseph’s Teachers Training College in Bembeke, Dedza.
The five-day conference, running from 26 to 30 August, has brought together more than 300 young people from Catholic dioceses across Malawi.
Gadama said being rooted in Christ should not mean remaining passive, urging young people to use their talents and opportunities to make a positive difference in their communities.
“A young person rooted in Christ must bear fruit—in character, skills, work, innovation, service and leadership,” she said.
She also encouraged young people to take care of themselves and to approach relevant institutions whenever they face challenges.
Gadama said government has various programmes aimed at supporting young people, adding that NYCOM remains ready to provide platforms where the youth can share ideas, find opportunities and pursue their aspirations.
She further highlighted the contribution of the Catholic Church to Malawi over the past 125 years, particularly in education, healthcare and other social services.
The conference is being held under the theme “Rooted in Christ, Sent for Mission: Celebrating 125 Years of Evangelization in Malawi.”
It features prayer, leadership workshops, motivational talks, group discussions, team-building activities, cultural performances, gospel music and talent showcases.
Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia, Archbishop Gian Luca Perici, has also urged young people to strengthen both their spiritual and social lives.
The conference has attracted Catholic leaders, priests and young people from across the country, with Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima and Dedza Diocese Bishop Peter Adrian Chifukwa among those attending.
