Mahama’s Third-Term Agenda? Stop Scaring Ghanaians — Kwakye Ofosu Takes Aim at NPP

Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that President John Dramani Mahama could seek a third presidential term, insisting that the President has repeatedly made his position on the matter clear.

Kwakye Ofosu questioned the opposition party’s continued emphasis on the third term debate, describing its approach as an attempt to create unnecessary fear and suspicion among Ghanaians.

According to the minister, President Mahama has consistently stated that he has no interest in extending his tenure beyond the constitutional limits.

He argued that the NPP should focus on substantive national issues rather than repeatedly raising concerns about an agenda that the President has publicly rejected.

The minister’s comments come amid renewed political discussions about presidential term limits and the constitutional provisions governing how long an individual can serve as Ghana’s President.

The debate has attracted attention from political figures, legal practitioners and civil society actors, particularly following discussions surrounding the constitutional interpretation of presidential tenure.

However, Kwakye Ofosu believes the NPP’s position does not reflect the statements made by the President regarding his political ambitions.

He questioned why the opposition continues to suggest that Mahama intends to pursue a third term despite his repeated assurances to the contrary.

The minister’s criticism also touches on the broader political contest between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP, with both parties exchanging arguments over constitutional governance and the country’s democratic future.

For the government spokesperson, the third-term narrative risks distracting the public from pressing national concerns, including economic development, employment, infrastructure and governance.

Ghana’s 1992 Constitution limits an individual to being elected President for a maximum of two terms. The provision remains a central feature of the country’s democratic framework and is intended to prevent the indefinite concentration of presidential power.

Kwakye Ofosu’s remarks therefore seek to reassure the public that Mahama’s stated position remains consistent with the existing constitutional arrangement.

He has challenged the NPP to reconsider its messaging and avoid presenting the third-term issue as an impending political development when, according to him, the President has repeatedly dismissed such intentions.

The controversy highlights how constitutional questions can become subjects of political disagreement, even when the parties involved interpret public statements differently.

As the debate continues, the government maintains that Mahama is not interested in extending his presidential tenure, while the opposition’s concerns have kept the issue in the political conversation.

Ultimately, the discussion has renewed attention on the importance of respecting Ghana’s constitutional term limits and ensuring that political debates are grounded in clear statements and facts.
