We Are Working With GoldBod To Pilot Digital Gold Tokens – Mensah Thompson

According to a report by GHOne TV today being Saturday, October 24, 2026, Mensah Thompson Esq., Deputy Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has revealed that the Commission is working with the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to pilot digital gold tokens as part of efforts to explore new opportunities in the country’s financial and gold sectors.

The initiative is expected to introduce a digital approach to representing gold-related value, potentially creating new ways for market participants to engage with gold through technology.

The collaboration also highlights the growing interest in combining Ghana’s gold industry with emerging digital financial solutions.

Speaking on the development, Thompson indicated that the SEC and GoldBod were working together to test the concept through a pilot programme.

Such a pilot would provide an opportunity for the institutions to assess how digital gold tokens could operate within Ghana’s regulatory and financial environment before any wider implementation is considered.

Digital gold tokens generally refer to digital assets designed to represent ownership of, or an interest in, a specified quantity of gold. Depending on how a particular system is structured, these tokens may offer users a digital means of accessing gold-related investments.

However, their actual benefits and risks depend on factors such as the backing arrangements, ownership rights, security measures and regulatory protections established for the product.

The involvement of the Securities and Exchange Commission is particularly significant because digital financial products may require clear rules to protect investors and ensure transparency. Cooperation with GoldBod could also help establish a framework that reflects the specific needs of Ghana’s gold market.

The proposed pilot comes amid broader discussions about modernising financial services and exploring technology-driven investment opportunities. For Ghana, the initiative could create room for further innovation in the management and trading of gold-related assets.

However, the announcement does not by itself establish when the pilot will begin, how the tokens will be structured or whether they will eventually become available to the general public.

Further details from the SEC and GoldBod will be important in determining how the proposed digital gold token initiative will work and what opportunities it could offer to investors and other market participants in Ghana.
