An Israeli doctor with a passion for exotic plants was caught attempting to smuggle nearly 300 banana tree saplings and staghorn ferns from Thailand into Israel, landing himself in legal trouble after customs inspectors discovered the illicit goods at Ben-Gurion Airport.

The man, whose name was not disclosed in Hebrew-language media reports, is a resident of central Israel and works as a medical doctor. When questioned about the plants, he offered an unusual explanation: he claimed to be an exotic-plant collector who intended to use the specimens for personal purposes in his home garden, which he described as a “jungle.”

The plants were packed into five separate suitcases and duffel bags, according to reports. Customs inspectors discovered the botanical haul, detained the doctor for questioning and initiated legal proceedings against him, authorities said in a statement.

While the episode may sound like an eccentric gardening adventure, Israeli officials warned that illegally importing plants can pose a serious threat to the country’s agriculture and natural environment.

Plants brought into Israel without the required permits can carry pests, insects and diseases that are not present locally. If introduced, such threats can spread through crops and natural habitats, potentially causing extensive damage to agricultural production and the environment.

“Even a small plant in a suitcase, or a single fruit or vegetable, can cause immense damage to agriculture and nature in Israel. Even plants that appear healthy can carry pests and diseases that do not exist in the country, causing irreversible damage and even endangering entire agricultural sectors,” Shlomit Tzioni, director of the Plant Protection and Inspection Services at the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, said in a press statement.

“I call on the public to demonstrate responsibility and not bring plants or plant produce into Israel without the required permits. Thanks to the vigilance of the customs inspectors and the cooperation with the Plant Protection and Inspection Services inspectors, the unlawful entry of plants was prevented in this case,” she added.
