After many years of struggling to get his work published, 34-year-old Nickodemus Quitoco says recording studios are expensive and unaffordable for many upcoming artists.
Quitoco, an upcoming artist, poet, and writer, said he has a large collection of unpublished work that he is yet to release because he does not have access to a recording studio or a computer on which to type his poems and stories, which are currently handwritten.
He said this has denied him the opportunity to fully explore and develop his music career.
He stated that he has written more than ten poems, one storybook, and dozens of songs inspired by his life experiences. “I draw inspiration from the things that I have been through and experience daily. My writings are mainly intended to teach people, especially the younger generation, about our culture and language through the vernacular,” he added.
Quitoco said a lack of financial resources is stifling talent in the region, as many young people possess the necessary skills but lack the equipment and support needed to develop and showcase their abilities.
He further appealed to the government and the private sector to assist him in any way possible, particularly with the publication of his poems and stories written in the Rukwangali language.
“I have many educational poems and short stories written, but I have no access to a computer to type or print them. I am therefore calling on the government or any private individual to please assist me in any way possible,” he concluded.
He also called on established artists to support emerging talent instead of exploiting upcoming artists by charging them excessive fees. On average, recording studios in Rundu charge about N$800.00 for a complete recording project.
