No fewer than nine passengers were killed on Monday afternoon in a crash along the Ijebu-Ode-Ore Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident occurred at about 5 pm near the Bethel area of the Ijebu-Ode corridor of the expressway and involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B-299DT and a white Sino Truck marked AAB 162 XD.
The vehicles were suspected of belonging to the Delta State Transport Line and to a company involved in industrial gas operations in Ogun State, respectively.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Abeokuta, said nine passengers – three males and six females – were involved in the crash.
Odunsi said all nine victims died at the scene.
He said the crash occurred during rainfall, leaving the road surface wet.
“Preliminary investigation identified speed violation (SPV) as the probable cause of the crash. The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the report, arriving at 4:58 pm,” he said.
Odunsi said the remains of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode.
He added that the two vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Divisional headquarters by personnel of the police Motor Traffic Division.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise caution during rainfall, obey speed limits and maintain safe following distances.
He also warned motorists against speeding on wet roads, noting that reduced tyre grip and visibility could make it difficult to control vehicles or stop safely.
