Independence: NSCDC deploys 3,000 personnel in FCT

ABUJA: The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 3,000 personnel across the territory to enforce law and order and ensure a peaceful celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Corps Monica Ojobi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

She said the FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, ordered the deployment to secure the lives and property of residents, as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) in the territory and its environs, before, during and after the celebration.

The personnel were drawn from specialised departments and units of the Corps, including the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Unit and Counter-Terrorism Unit.

Ojobi said there was also a massive deployment to volatile areas and soft targets, including shopping malls, recreational centres, markets, motor parks, amusement parks and locations housing CNAI.

She added that the Command’s undercover unit had been deployed for covert operations and surveillance to prevent emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

According to her, black spots, including uncompleted buildings that harbour criminals, are also being covered to avert security breaches.

Odumosu directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to ensure that their respective Area Councils remained on top of their security responsibilities and that the presence of the Corps was felt across the territory.

“As usual, I will not tolerate any form of security breaches. All hands must be on deck; ensure your personnel comply wholesomely,” he said.

He charged personnel to remain disciplined and maintain good conduct, while working in synergy with other security agencies to secure lives, property and government critical national assets and infrastructure.

Odumosu also admonished them to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement, avoid harassment and intimidation of citizens, and prevent accidental discharge.

He assured FCT residents of a safe celebration, saying the Corps would ensure a secure environment before, during and after the Independence Anniversary.

The Commandant urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement, individual or group to the nearest security agency.

He warned criminals and vandals to keep off critical national assets and infrastructure, adding that NSCDC covert officers and patrol teams were deployed across the city and would not spare offenders.

“We are ready to ensure the celebration is peaceful. You have a responsibility to carry out; you must be proactive, vigilant and ready to cooperate with us for our common good,” Odumosu said.
