Three entrepreneurs from northern Namibia have secured places in the national final of the Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off Competition after winning the regional preliminary round held in Oshakati on Saturday.
Nedbank Namibia sponsors the competition, with support from Bakpro and Agra. Lucia Gideon, Saima Shipululu and Loise Imvula were selected from 47 kapana vendors who took part in the competition.
The winners will now compete in the national final for business prizes designed to help them grow their enterprises.
The Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off Competition was introduced in 2014 to support informal food traders by giving them an opportunity to showcase their cooking skills while promoting small business development.
Nedbank Namibia Communications and Public Relations Manager Selma Kaulinge said the competition recognises the important role informal traders play in the country’s economy. “Kapana is a source of income for thousands of hardworking entrepreneurs across the country.
Through the Nedbank Kapana Cook-Off Competition, we are celebrating the resilience and determination of informal traders while providing a platform that can help them take their businesses to the next level,” she said.
Kaulinge said many successful businesses start small, making it important to support entrepreneurs with opportunities to grow.
“The talent and passion we witnessed in Oshakati demonstrate the remarkable potential that exists within our communities,” she said.
The overall winner of the competition will receive a fully equipped food trailer valued at N$150 000, N$10 000 in cash and a Bakpro Vetkoek voucher worth N$5 000.
The final preliminary round will take place in Windhoek on 19 September, where three more kapana vendors will qualify for the national final.
