Orihuela Costa Youth Programme Celebrates Successful First Year
AI summary
The free Costa Summer 26 scheme offered sport, outdoor activities and educational workshops to vulnerable teenagers aged between 12 and 16.
Orihuela City Council’s Social Welfare Department has concluded the first Costa Summer 26 programme following a positive response from participating teenagers and organisers.
The educational leisure initiative was created for young people aged between 12 and 16 living in Orihuela Costa. Councillor for Social Welfare Agustina Rodríguez attended the closing event and presented each participant with a commemorative gift.
Rodríguez described the programme’s first year as a success, saying it had enabled teenagers to enjoy activities designed specifically for them, share experiences and form new friendships.
During July, participants took part in a varied programme combining sport, nature, creativity and social interaction. Activities included surfing, paddleboarding, bodyboarding, climbing, adventure sports, craft workshops, cooperative games and an excursion to the island of Tabarca.
An important part of the initiative involved intergenerational workshops with older residents at the Alameda del Mar Civic Centre, where much of the programme was held. The sessions were intended to encourage communication, shared experiences and stronger relationships between different generations.
Rodríguez said the scheme had been created in response to requests from families and professionals working with young people in Orihuela Costa.
“The response demonstrates how important it is to continue providing opportunities for all young people, regardless of their personal or family circumstances,” she said.
The councillor also thanked the four municipal social services professionals responsible for delivering the programme, highlighting their work in ensuring that activities were conducted safely and adapted to participants’ needs.
Costa Summer 26 was provided free of charge to families and was aimed at teenagers receiving support from municipal social services or considered socially vulnerable.
The initiative sought to promote equal opportunities, social inclusion, positive relationships and healthy lifestyles.
Rodríguez said its greatest achievement was that participants had finished the programme with happy memories, new friendships and experiences that allowed them to enjoy their free time in a safe and supportive environment.
