The Nasarawa State Government on Wednesday, confirmed 15 Cases of diphtheria in three Local Government Areas of the State with children aged between two months and 11 years among those affected.
The Director of Public Health in the Nasarawa State Ministry of Health, Dr Peter Attah, disclosed this at a press briefing in Lafia, the state capital.
He explained that the confirmed cases were recorded in Wamba, Lafia and Keffi Local Government Areas, with one case recorded in Wamba, three in Lafia and 11 in Keffi.
According to him, the affected children are currently receiving medical attention at various health facilities across the state, including the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi.
The Director disclosed that, investigations conducted by health authorities revealed that the affected children had not been vaccinated against diphtheria, a potentially life-threatening vaccine-preventable before the outbreak of the disease.
Dr Attah described the development as a wake-up call for intensified public awareness and immunisation campaigns against diphtheria and other vaccine-preventable diseases, said efforts were on to contained the spread.
Urging parents and caregivers to ensure that their children receive recommended routine vaccinations, he stated that immunisation remains one of the most effective ways of preventing life-threatening diseases.
