Panic as Super Eagles falter in 2027 AFCON qualifiers

The early cracks in Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have triggered widespread anxiety and panic among football fans, with growing concerns over the Super Eagles’ inconsistent performances, tactical limitations and apparent lack of discipline.

The 2027 AFCON, scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The Super Eagles, drawn in Group L alongside Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar and co-hosts Tanzania, began their campaign under considerable pressure to restore confidence following recent disappointments on the international stage.

The three-time African champions opened their campaign before their home supporters at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, coming from a goal down to defeat Madagascar 2-1.

Debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor found the net to rescue the three points and offer a measure of relief to a national team still struggling to shake off the disappointment of consecutive failures to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

However, whatever confidence the victory generated was short-lived as the Super Eagles suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second match of the qualifiers, a result that has renewed questions about the team’s capacity to navigate the qualification campaign successfully.

The defeat not only dented Nigeria’s qualification hopes but also marked the first competitive loss in regulation time under head coach Eric Chelle since guiding the team to a bronze-medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

For supporters who had expected the AFCON bronze medal to provide a foundation for renewed progress, the result was another painful reminder of the team’s unresolved problems.

Calculators out again for Super Eagles

The defeat to Guinea-Bissau has once again forced Nigerian football fans to embark on another round of qualification permutations rather than confidently professing their chances of picking the remaining group ticket.

The situation is particularly delicate because Tanzania, one of the tournament’s co-hosts, already have an automatic place at the competition, leaving the remaining three countries in Group L to compete for the group’s sole qualification ticket.

After two matches, Guinea-Bissau occupy the top position with six points from two victories and a goal difference of plus five.

Nigeria are second with three points, having recorded one victory and one defeat, while the remaining fixtures will determine whether the Super Eagles can recover from their disappointing start.

With four matches left, the Super Eagles must significantly improve their results and goal difference while hoping Guinea-Bissau drop points.

The mathematical possibility of qualification remains, but the circumstances have created an atmosphere of uncertainty around a team expected to compete consistently at the highest level of African football.

Football fans gripped by fear

A former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) First Vice-President, Seyi Akinwunmi, said Nigerians were justified in expressing anger and frustration following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat.

He argued that the disappointment was understandable, particularly when a country with Nigeria’s football history finds itself struggling against opponents it has traditionally been expected to overcome.

“Every Nigerian who watches our national teams struggle against sides we historically dominated will have their pain, frustration and passion entirely justified.

“When a proud footballing nation like ours is reduced to permutations and praying for other results, anger is natural,” he said.

However, Akinwunmi maintained that the problems confronting Nigerian football extend beyond the latest result, pointing to decades of institutional weaknesses, inadequate infrastructure and the absence of a sustainable grassroots development system.

He also appealed to Nigerians not to direct all their frustrations at the current leadership of the National Sports Commission, arguing that structural reforms require time and consistent accountability.

His position reflects a broader debate over whether the Super Eagles’ recent struggles are primarily the consequence of immediate technical decisions or deeper deficiencies within the country’s football administration.

On the part of football analyst Aduralere Ashade, the latest defeat raises more immediate questions about the team’s discipline, tactical approach and selection decisions under Chelle.

He argued that the team’s inability to maintain competitiveness in decisive matches has become a recurring concern.

“I don’t want to use the word nothing to write home about, but we have been lacking, and I think we have expected much, much better from the Super Eagles than what we have seen,” he said.

According to him, the team’s performances under Chelle have exposed weaknesses that are not always reflected in the team’s overall results.

He cited the encounter against Morocco, in which Nigeria struggled to create attacking opportunities despite periods of possession, and the Guinea-Bissau defeat, where the Super Eagles again failed to translate possession into meaningful attacking pressure.

“It is toothless domination. They dominate the game, but it does not lead to anything,” he said.

Ashade believes the problem is particularly evident when Nigeria face opponents capable of matching their physicality and tactical organisation.

He argued that while the Super Eagles possess sufficient individual quality to compete against many African sides, their midfield, defence and goalkeeping departments have not consistently demonstrated the required competitiveness in demanding fixtures.

Segun Bakare also said with four qualification matches remaining, the pressure is mounting on Chelle to address the concerns surrounding his team’s performances.

He said the coach must now find a balance between maintaining tactical consistency and introducing the flexibility required to respond to different opponents.

He added that the coach must also establish clearer standards on discipline, selection and competitive readiness.

“For Nigeria, the immediate task is to recover from the Guinea-Bissau setback and keep qualification hopes alive. But the broader challenge extends beyond securing a place at the 2027 AFCON,” he said.

Similarly, a former Nigerian junior international, Abraham Fackaa, said the Super Eagles have formed a bad habit of disappointing their teeming supporters.

He said having discovered that some of the players have decided to toy with the passion and emotions of Nigerians, he has lowered his expectations.

The former BCC Lions and Golden Eaglets defensive midfielder maintained that Super Eagles are not invincible but losing by such a wide margin to the less endowed Wild Dogs of Guinea-Bissau was embarrassing to say the least.

“These days, I have reduced my expectations from the Super Eagles. They now play so lackadaisically that one begins to wonder whether they know what it means to put on the national colours.

“In our days, it was a different story. Players were ready to spill blood to bring glory to Nigeria. Unfortunately, the present generation is more committed to their foreign clubs,” said the former Calabar Rovers player.

Fackaa, however, said if the coach would introduce the necessary changes in the team, the Super Eagles would still qualify for the 2027 AFCON.

“Super Eagles are already walking a tight rope. Hearts are palpitating but some of us are used to such disappointments. Anyway, if they wake up from slumber, they may still qualify.

“At the moment, one can’t confidently say that Nigeria is going to pick the Group L ticket. From what I saw in their last match, there must be a change of attitude by the players for Nigeria to pick the 2027 AFCON ticket,” he maintained.
