Why being thrust into power by a single patron never ends well: the case of Kudakwashe Tagwirei

Power acquired through proximity is always borrowed time.

It does not belong to the individual holding it.

It belongs entirely to the benefactor.

In political history, whenever a supreme leader attempts to manufacture a successor by bypassing institutional norms and seasoned veterans, the resulting edifice appears formidable only as long as the protector remains in power.

The moment that single shield is removed, the illusion shatters.

We are watching this exact dynamic unfold today in Zimbabwe.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed his close ally and tenderpreneur Kudakwashe Tagwirei into the ZANU-PF Politburo as Secretary for Economic Affairs and Investment Promotion.

This appointment comes just days after Tagwirei was sworn in as the new Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion.

Only weeks ago, the same man was appointed a Senator using new powers granted to the president under constitutional amendments enacted in July this year.

This meteoric rise is unprecedented.

It is not surprising, however.

For months, intense political maneuvering to alter how the head of state is elected and extend the president’s term of office fueled widespread speculation.

The president appears to be aggressively positioning Tagwirei as his preferred successor.

Yet Tagwirei possesses no known political history.

He has no roots within the ruling party.

His main qualification appears to be his questionable commercial deals that made him super wealthy, transforming him into a primary financier of the ruling establishment.

His elevation stands in stark contrast to the core tenets of Zimbabwe’s ruling elite.

Only a decade ago, the ruling authorities swore that no one without liberation war credentials would ever rule Zimbabwe.

Senior military generals explicitly declared they would never salute anyone who did not fight in the liberation struggle.

Today, those foundational declarations are swept aside to facilitate Tagwirei’s rapid ascent.

The timing of these moves is particularly revealing.

Occurring just ahead of the ZANU-PF Annual People’s Conference officially opening tomorrow, October 16, this rapid elevation looks like a calculated attempt to shut the door on Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Chiwenga is the former defense forces commander who led the 2017 coup d’état that ousted Robert Mugabe and allowed Mnangagwa to return from exile and assume power.

Backed by his liberation history and his decisive role in securing the presidency for Mnangagwa, Chiwenga has long been viewed as the natural successor.

Mnangagwa appears to have other plans.

By thrusting a wealthy political novice past veteran cadres and military heavyweights, the president is constructing a classical political trap.

He is granting Tagwirei maximum title with zero foundational legitimacy.

History shows us how this pattern resolves.

Authority created by decree rather than earned through shared sacrifice or institutional standing is entirely artificial.

It produces intense resentment among the veterans, generals, and administrators who spent decades rising through the ranks.

We saw this exact vulnerability in the Central African Republic when President François Bozizé bypassed professional military lines to elevate his son and close family proxy, Jean-Francis Bozizé.

Jean-Francis was handed total control over national defense and lucrative security concessions without ever serving an institutional day in the ranks.

The moment Bozizé fell in 2013, the professional army refused to fire a single shot to save a regime built on nepotism.

Jean-Francis was thrust into sudden, permanent exile under international warrants, stripped of every vestige of power.

We witnessed it in Egypt when Gamal Abdel Nasser bypassed seasoned army strategists to make his close personal companion, Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer, commander-in-chief and de facto successor.

Amer built a vast personal patronage network that isolated the professional officer corps and demoralized the military hierarchy.

This resulted in a total institutional rupture during the 1967 war, which stripped away Nasser’s personal shield and left Amer facing a forced, tragic end.

We saw it when Grace Mugabe and her G40 faction were swept away overnight in Zimbabwe.

The moment Robert Mugabe’s executive umbrella was removed by the military, her rapid path to the presidency vanished.

At the same time, members of her faction fled into exile, while she was stripped of party power and her political trajectory came to a total halt.

​We saw it in Tunisia when former first lady Leïla Ben Ali and her notorious inner circle watched their absolute financial empire collapse overnight during the 2011 revolution.

Their unchecked grip on the nation’s banking, real estate, and major businesses was sustained entirely by presidential proximity rather than institutional legitimacy.

When Ben Ali fell, they were left completely exposed to sweeping asset seizures, criminal indictments, and sudden, panicked flight into exile.

While the benefactor lives, that resentment remains suppressed under the surface.

Those who feel bypassed bite their tongues and wait.

They wait because they know the favorite’s strength is purely derivative.

Tagwirei holds no independent base of support.

He has no organic loyalty within the armed forces, no historical standing among party cadres, and no deep connection to the broader public.

His entire political weight rests on a single man’s favor.

When the benefactor is no longer on the scene, the protective umbrella collapses instantly.

The vacuum created by a leader’s exit is immediately filled by those who hold real institutional power.

The veteran cadres and military commanders who were sidelined do not forget the humiliation of being bypassed for an outsider.

Without his patron to sign decrees or shield him from state power, the favored successor finds himself completely isolated.

Being propelled to high office by a single benefactor usually ends in tears.

When the benefactor is gone, the favored proxy is left exposed to the very institutions they bypassed, facing a reckoning that is as swift as it is tragic.

The higher the artificial ascent, the more catastrophic the fall.
