Is Tagwirei blinded by power, unable to see his fellow tenderpreneurs’ feverish looting is preparation for regime collapse?

The sheer scale of capital extraction currently tearing through Zimbabwe’s economic baseline is without precedent in the nation’s history.

Across strategic mineral reserves, emergency municipal concessions, energy procurement pipelines, and currency arbitrage loops, the ruling class and its corporate satellites are active.

They are engaging in an unprecedented, hyper-accelerated wealth grab.

Across every corner of the country, this extraction is executed through calculated methods.

It involves weaponizing state procurement loopholes to bypass public tenders, driving destructive mineral extraction, and engaging in massive gold smuggling alongside opaque state asset procurement.

These actions work together to drain national reserves.

This frantic, unbridled accumulation is far from representing the supreme confidence of an enduring political order.

Instead, it is the classic signature of an insider class that senses the terminal hour of its patron regime.

Political economy teaches us that parasitic tenderpreneurs stop investing in long-term productive assets and instead convert every sovereign revenue stream into liquid, extraterritorial capital.

By doing this, they are not planning a future—they are engineering an exit strategy.

The feverish rush to siphon billions into offshore tax havens, Dubai luxury real estate, and impenetrable shell networks reflects a profound, calculated panic.

They recognize that the current model is entirely unsustainable and that when the political winds inevitably shift, the state house’s shield will evaporate overnight.

These financial operators can plainly see the structural decay surrounding them.

A citizenry ground down by unmitigated poverty, with most forced to eke out a living on the streets.

They watch as thousands lose their lives in hospital wards that lack the most basic medication and lifesaving equipment, while infrastructure falls apart all around them.

They recognize that a regime presiding over such deepening human misery is entirely unsustainable.

When the political winds inevitably shift, the state house’s shield will evaporate overnight.

Furthermore, these seasoned opportunists understand the profound fragility of their political ecosystem.

They know that buying allegiance through lavish gifts—distributing luxury vehicle fleets to party functionaries, provincial elites, and co-opted traditional leaders—is a fleeting strategy.

The recipients of this patronage routinely perform loyalty only for as long as the cash flows.

But they will turn on their benefactor the moment power changes hands.

These insiders also see the suicidal recklessness of forcing constitutional amendments to prolong executive tenure while systematically purging historical liberation struggle veterans and long-standing party leaders.

They recognize that alienating both the popular base and the armed forces creates an explosive disjuncture destined to implode.

Thus, the oligarchy loots with feverish intensity, preparing for life after the Second Republic.

Yet, amidst this frantic scrambling for the lifeboats, Kudakwashe Tagwirei appears strangely oblivious to the impending shipwreck.

Rising at meteoric speed under the direct executive patronage of the president, Tagwirei seems completely intoxicated by the allure of state power.

While his peers quietly build offshore escape hatches and convert local rents into safe hard-currency assets abroad, Tagwirei has aggressively expanded his footprint directly into the formal political fray—climbing into key party organs and accepting executive state appointments.

So blinded is he by his rapid elevation that he appears naively convinced he can inherit the crown, harboring high-level political ambitions as the natural successor to the throne.

He operates as though the patronage system that elevated him is a permanent feature of the Zimbabwean landscape rather than a fragile, temporary construct tethered entirely to the survival of a single aging patron.

This fundamental miscalculation highlights the tragic myopia of political hubris.

Tagwirei seems to believe that commercial dominance and executive proximity can be seamlessly converted into enduring state authority.

He forgets that in a system lacking popular legitimacy and institutional grounding, the very patronage that builds a tycoon can overnight turn him into the primary target of a successor regime or a popular uprising.

While his fellow tenderpreneurs recognize that the establishment is built on sand and are feverishly securing their post-regime survival, Tagwirei continues to build castles in the air.

He appears to genuinely believe in a political future that every other insider knows is on the brink of collapse.

When the political reckoning finally arrives, those who quietly stashed their spoils abroad will be watching from safe shores.

Others mistook temporary patron protection for permanent statecraft.

Consequently, they will be left stranded amidst the ruins of the regime they helped hollow out.
