“Helen Zille Will Never Become The Joburg Mayor Despite Strong Election Performance” Kunene Says

Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene has insisted that Democratic Alliance (DA) veteran Helen Zille will not become the next mayor of Johannesburg, despite the DA’s strong performance in the 2026 Local Government Elections.Kunene’s remarks come amid growing political discussions over which party will eventually take control of the City of Johannesburg following the municipal elections.

The DA’s performance has strengthened its position in the country’s economic hub, raising expectations that the party could play a leading role in determining the city’s next administration. However, Kunene appears unconvinced that the electoral gains will translate into a mayoral victory for Zille.

The Johannesburg mayoral contest is expected to be heavily influenced by coalition negotiations, with political parties likely to engage in discussions to secure the numbers required to form a governing administration.

Although the DA’s strong showing puts it in a favourable position, winning the mayoral position is not determined by electoral performance alone. The party will still need sufficient support within the municipal council to ensure that its preferred candidate is elected.

Kunene’s statement also highlights the complicated political relationships between parties that could shape the next administration in Johannesburg.

The PA remains an important player in the coalition discussions, and its position could become significant in determining which political formation eventually secures control of the municipality.

Zille, a prominent figure in South African politics and a former DA federal leader, has remained at the centre of discussions surrounding the party’s possible leadership ambitions in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, the prospect of a new mayoral administration has attracted considerable attention, particularly given the challenges facing the metropolitan municipality, including service delivery, infrastructure maintenance, electricity, water supply and financial management.

Kunene’s confidence that Zille will not become mayor raises further questions about the political calculations taking place behind the scenes as parties prepare for negotiations.

Ultimately, the composition of the new municipal council and the alliances formed between political parties will determine who gets the opportunity to lead Johannesburg.

For now, Kunene has made his position clear, insisting that despite the DA’s strong electoral performance, Helen Zille should not expect to become the next mayor of Johannesburg.
