FBI Agents ‘Playing Possum’ as Fear and Retaliation Claims Rock Kash Patel’s Leadership

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is facing a deepening internal crisis, with current and former agents describing an organization where fear of dismissal and retaliation has begun to affect how employees approach their work.

Five people with knowledge of the bureau’s internal operations told the Daily Mail that morale has deteriorated dramatically under FBI Director Kash Patel, with some experienced agents allegedly limiting their involvement in investigations to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

One former agent described a growing practice of simply remaining at a desk, answering emails and completing mandatory online training rather than taking on substantial investigative work.

The behavior has reportedly become an informal survival strategy among employees who fear that involvement in politically sensitive investigations could later expose them to disciplinary action.

Agents Fear Being Punished for Doing Their Jobs

According to the sources, some FBI employees are increasingly concerned that cases they were assigned under previous leadership could eventually be reviewed by the Trump administration, potentially putting their careers at risk.

One agent summed up the atmosphere bluntly, saying that investigators cannot effectively operate when they are working under a culture of fear.

Another former employee claimed that some workers have effectively decided to keep their heads down rather than risk being associated with cases that could later become controversial.

The concerns come as the FBI has experienced significant changes in its senior ranks since President Donald Trump returned to office.

Senior FBI Expertise Has Been Lost

Former acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll alleged in a lawsuit that all six of the bureau’s executive assistant directors were either dismissed or instructed to resign or retire shortly after Trump took office.

Other senior officials reportedly departed voluntarily, while several Special Agents in Charge have been demoted, transferred or removed.

The FBI Agents Association, which represents more than 14,000 current and retired special agents, has expressed concern about reports that agents could be dismissed without proper due process simply for carrying out assigned investigations.

The organization has argued that agents do not choose which cases they investigate and that many of those facing scrutiny were simply performing their duties according to the law.

Departures Could Leave a Knowledge Gap

The loss of experienced personnel has raised another concern: the disappearance of institutional knowledge that can take years to develop.

One agent estimated that becoming a genuine specialist in a particular area of federal investigation can require roughly 15 years.

That experience is particularly valuable because senior investigators often serve as mentors to younger agents, passing down practical knowledge about handling complex cases that cannot easily be learned through classroom training.

With experienced personnel leaving, some inside the bureau are questioning whether enough expertise remains to replace them.

Recruitment Decisions Raise New Questions

The FBI’s efforts to fill vacancies have also generated concern among some employees.

Several sources pointed specifically to changes involving applicants with previous involvement in prostitution or bestiality, saying the decision to remove automatic disqualification in such circumstances has damaged confidence in the bureau’s standards.

One agent questioned whether the organization is attempting to preserve the high level of expertise and professionalism traditionally associated with the FBI or simply trying to increase its headcount.

The criticism reflects a broader anxiety over what the bureau’s future identity will look like after the recent upheaval.

Cybersecurity Breach Adds to Employee Frustration

Internal concerns have also been heightened by a reported cybersecurity breach.

The FBI recently informed current and former employees that hackers allegedly associated with the ShinyHunters group had obtained sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, job titles and Social Security numbers.

However, one person familiar with the situation claimed affected employees have received little information since the initial notification.

The source said there had been no meaningful follow-up explaining how the bureau intended to address the vulnerabilities or assist those whose information was compromised.

Patel Faces Criticism Over His Leadership Style

Some current and former FBI personnel have portrayed Patel as a director who is overly focused on public image and personal recognition.

Critics inside the bureau have accused him of seeking disproportionate credit for successful FBI operations while remaining disconnected from the everyday work carried out by agents across the country.

Some sources nevertheless expressed sympathy for Patel, suggesting that his difficulties may partly stem from limited experience managing the FBI’s vast operational structure and advice from those around him.

Patel has also attracted public criticism over his appearance at a celebration with the US men’s ice hockey team following its Olympic victory.

Controversies Have Followed Patel Beyond the FBI

Other incidents have further fueled criticism of the director.

Patel publicly claimed that the FBI had helped prevent an alleged attack connected to a White House UFC event before all suspects had been arrested and while the case remained sealed.

The Secret Service reportedly objected strongly, saying it had led the investigation from the beginning.

Patel also previously announced that a potential suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk had been taken into custody, only for that person to be cleared hours later.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have additionally questioned allegations concerning Patel’s use of FBI aircraft, helicopters and other resources.

Patel has denied allegations that he improperly used government resources, calling the accusations a “total lie” during an oversight hearing.

White House Defends Patel’s Record

The White House has rejected claims that Patel is struggling in his position.

A White House spokesperson told the Daily Mail that Patel was doing an excellent job protecting the country, combating terrorism and investigating crime.

The administration also pointed to a 9.3 percent decline in violent crime during 2025, describing it as the largest annual reduction on record.

Patel’s supporters have cited those figures, along with reductions in other categories of crime, as evidence that his leadership has produced tangible results.

Politically Sensitive Investigations Remain a Flashpoint

Patel has repeatedly denied claims that the FBI has purged personnel because they worked on politically sensitive investigations, including probes connected to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

However, more than a dozen agents involved in such investigations have sued over alleged wrongful termination.

The former agents have subsequently expanded their lawsuit to seek class-action status covering more than 50 former FBI personnel.

They are seeking reinstatement, back pay and a declaration that their removals violated their constitutional rights to due process.

A federal court is expected to hear arguments from the former agents and the Trump administration later this month.

Questions Over the FBI’s Future

For the agents who spoke about the situation, the damage extends beyond individual employment disputes.

They fear that the departure of veteran investigators, uncertainty among remaining employees and disputes over politically sensitive cases could weaken the bureau’s effectiveness for years.

Even if the legal battles eventually resolve in the agents’ favor, one source said restoring public and internal confidence in the FBI will be a long process.

The most serious concern, according to one agent, is whether the current leadership has the character necessary to rebuild an institution whose work depends heavily on independence, expertise and trust.

The FBI and a spokesperson for Patel did not respond to the Daily Mail’s requests for comment on the allegations.
