Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) officials confiscated more than four tonnes of meat products being smuggled into the country from South Africa.
In a statement issued on Monday, 24 August, ZIMRA said the products were intercepted at an illegal crossing point and included sausages, chicken cuts and polony.
“Packs of smuggled meat were intercepted at one of the illegal crossing points in Beitbridge, thanks to the alertness of our border security stakeholders,” reads the statement.
“A total of 4,330 kg of meat and meat products was intercepted, comprising 3,480 kg of sausages, 810 kg of chicken cuts and 40 kg of polony.
“Importing meat and meat products requires the necessary biosafety, veterinary and Control of Goods permits. Some products also require an import licence from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
“This interception is about more than stopping smuggling. It is about protecting our communities and ensuring that meat entering the country complies with the required safety and regulatory standards.
“We urge the public to buy meat from licensed retailers and never buy or support the trade in smuggled goods.”
