Inside the ₦250m Rivers Community School Funded by Burna Boy and Supervised by VDM

A video exposing the condition of a community school in Rivers State set off a chain of events that eventually brought Nigerian music star Burna Boy into a major education and healthcare project in his home community. Located in Odiokwu, Ahoada West Local Government Area, the development has grown into a reported ₦250 million initiative featuring secondary school buildings, a clinic and other facilities.

VeryDarkMan, popularly known as VDM, became closely involved after drawing attention to the school’s condition. Burna Boy agreed to fund the intervention, while Fego Works Limited handled the construction and VDM supervised the project.

The development attracted renewed attention on October 15, 2026, when VDM shared a tour of the completed structures and defended the expenditure. He described four structures built from scratch, fencing around more than 3.4 hectares of land, separate junior and senior secondary school blocks, a clinic and other amenities.

However, the reported ₦50 million spent on murals featuring Burna Boy, VDM and other people associated with the project has triggered criticism. The controversy has drawn attention to the construction budget, the facilities provided and the future of the development.

How the Odiokwu School Project Started

The story began with concerns about the condition of Community Secondary School in Odiokwu. In early 2026, a young woman from the community, Uchechi Ogadinma, raised the issue on social media, drawing attention to years of neglect at the school.

The controversy also involved an alleged assault involving Ogadinma and Ahoada West Local Government Chairman Eugene Cheta Epelle. Epelle denied the assault allegations.

The school’s condition attracted wider attention, including a visit by VDM. Burna Boy subsequently agreed to finance the school’s reconstruction.

What began as an intervention over poor educational infrastructure expanded to include a clinic and other facilities intended to serve residents. By October, the project had become a major community development initiative, with the singer’s financial contribution and VDM’s supervisory role at the centre of public discussion.

Burna Boy’s Investment in His Home Community

Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, is the funder of the Odiokwu development.

The reported investment of more than ₦250 million covers separate junior and senior secondary school blocks, an administrative building, a clinic, toilets, streetlights and perimeter fencing.

The facilities are intended to improve access to education and healthcare within the community. The school provides dedicated classroom buildings for secondary education, while the clinic is intended to serve local residents.

The development has also drawn attention to the role of private individuals and public figures in addressing infrastructure problems in Nigerian communities.

VeryDarkMan’s Role and Fego Works Limited’s Involvement

VDM has been one of the project’s most visible representatives, sharing updates, explaining construction decisions and presenting the completed facilities to the public.

Fego Works Limited is the construction contractor. Burna Boy provided the funding, VDM supervised the project, and Fego Works Limited handled the construction.

VDM’s involvement also placed him at the centre of the debate over how the money was spent. Following criticism of the murals, he used his October 15 statement to defend the project and list its major components, arguing that the entire development should be considered rather than focusing on the artwork alone.

He also claimed that a comparable government project could have attracted a budget of ₦5 billion.

What VDM Revealed During the October 15 Tour

The October 15, 2026, video offered a closer look at the facilities and construction features included in the development. VDM described four major structures built from scratch, alongside fencing covering more than 3.4 hectares.

The facilities include:

* A junior secondary school block for JSS 1 to JSS 3.

* A senior secondary school block for SS 1 to SS 3.

* An administrative building.

* A clinic described by VDM as well equipped.

* Toilets and fans in the classrooms and clinic.

* Finished ceilings, roofing and fitted doors.

* Solar powered streetlights.

* A perimeter fence surrounding the premises.

The separate junior and senior secondary school blocks provide dedicated spaces for the two stages of secondary education. The administrative building is intended to support school operations, while the clinic extends the project’s purpose beyond education.

The Perimeter Fence Covers More Than 3.4 Hectares

One of the specific details in VDM’s October 15 explanation concerned the perimeter fence. He said it covered more than 3.4 hectares of land and required over 18,000 concrete blocks.

VDM placed the price of each block between ₦850 and ₦900. Using 18,000 blocks as the minimum quantity, the cost of the blocks alone would range from ₦15.3 million to ₦16.2 million.

These calculations use the quantities and prices VDM supplied.

The completed fence required additional materials and labour, including cement, sand, foundations, plastering and finishing. Those expenses add to the cost of the blocks.

The ₦50 Million Murals That Sparked Controversy

The murals became a major talking point after VDM shared a video of the artwork on October 9, 2026, ahead of the announced commissioning ceremony.

VDM stated that ₦50 million had been spent on murals and graffiti featuring Burna Boy, children and members of the project team. He defended the expenditure and expressed satisfaction with the finished work.

According to VDM’s October 15 explanation, the compound featured six murals. Four showed Burna Boy with children, while two depicted the singer alongside VDM and Winnie, who had been associated with the events that brought attention to the school.

The reported cost has drawn scrutiny because it represents a substantial amount within a project valued at more than ₦250 million. It has also prompted debate about the choice of images displayed in a school environment.

Critics have questioned whether the artwork gives too much prominence to the people involved in the project instead of educational themes. Others have argued that the money could have supported additional school resources.

Daniel Regha’s Reaction to the Artwork

Social media commentator Daniel Regha was among those who questioned the reported ₦50 million expenditure.

On October 10, 2026, Regha criticised the amount spent on the murals and argued that the money could have been directed towards other school needs. He also questioned the repeated appearance of Burna Boy and VDM in the artwork.

The criticism shifted attention from the scale of the construction to the project’s spending priorities, including the balance between decorative features and practical educational resources.

Textbooks, computers, laboratory equipment and classroom furniture are among the materials that can directly support students’ learning. Their availability will be important to the school’s educational value.

VDM Says the Project Cost More Than ₦250 Million

In his October 15 statement, VDM said the entire development cost more than ₦250 million and challenged critics to consider the number of structures and construction features involved.

The project covers the school blocks, administrative building, clinic, perimeter fence, solar powered streetlights, classroom fittings and other amenities.

VDM also claimed that a similar government project could have been budgeted at ₦5 billion.

The reported project cost includes multiple structures and facilities, while the mural expenditure has attracted separate scrutiny. The two figures have become central to the public discussion surrounding the development.

What Happened With the October 10 Commissioning?

A commissioning ceremony was announced for Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Odiokwu Community Secondary School. The planned event also included a football match between teams from Ahoada West and Ahoada East.

A ₦1 million prize was announced for the football match associated with the event.

VDM’s October 15 video subsequently showcased the structures and renewed public interest in the project.

The opening of the buildings marks a major stage in the development. The school’s operation requires teachers, learning materials and administrative arrangements, while the clinic needs qualified healthcare personnel, appropriate equipment and medical supplies to provide regular services.

Who Will Manage the School and Clinic?

The project’s long term success depends on the arrangements for operating and maintaining the facilities.

For the school, key responsibilities include managing daily operations, recruiting teachers, providing learning materials and handling student enrolment.

The clinic requires qualified medical personnel, equipment, medical supplies and funding for recurring expenses.

Maintenance will also be necessary for the roofs, electrical installations, toilets, fans, doors, fencing and solar powered streetlights.

What the Project Could Mean for Odiokwu

The development represents a major private contribution to community infrastructure in Rivers State. By combining secondary school facilities with a clinic, the project aims to address needs extending beyond education alone.

For students, the new buildings provide a dedicated learning environment. For residents, the clinic offers the prospect of access to healthcare within the community.

The initiative also highlights the role private funding can play in addressing infrastructure problems. The project followed public attention to the school’s condition and expanded into a wider development involving educational and healthcare facilities.

Its long term impact will depend on the quality of education provided, the availability of teachers and learning resources, the clinic’s services and the maintenance of the buildings.

The Next Chapter for the Odiokwu School

The Odiokwu project began with public attention to a struggling community school and developed into a reported ₦250 million investment combining education and healthcare infrastructure. Burna Boy’s funding, VDM’s involvement and Fego Works Limited’s construction role have made the development a prominent community initiative in Rivers State.

The October 15 tour showcased the buildings, fencing and other amenities, while VDM defended the reported spending following criticism of the ₦50 million murals.

For Odiokwu, the project’s lasting value will depend on the services it delivers. Students need qualified teachers, suitable learning resources and a functioning school, while residents need a clinic equipped and staffed to provide healthcare.

The new buildings represent a significant development for the community. Their long term contribution will depend on how effectively the facilities serve residents in the years ahead.
