Kenya Power to Set Up Two Substations in Kwale and Kilifi Counties Costing KSh765Million

Kenya Power is investing approximately KSh 765 million in the construction of two new substations to strengthen the quality and reliability of electricity supply in Kwale and Kilifi counties.

Kenya Power is nearing completion of the Bomani 132/33kV substation in Kilifi County that is being put up at a cost of KSh455 million.

The substation will cater for growing demand for electricity from existing and upcoming customers within Kikambala, Vipingo, Kanamai and Mtwapa areas.

These areas have recently witnessed growing industrial and commercial activity as large and, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) expand their base from Mombasa.

Currently, customers in these areas are served by the Kilifi and Bamburi 132/33kV substations whose capacity is thinning as demand grows.

Similarly, Kenya Power is set to complete the construction of a 33/11kV substation at Kwale at a cost of KSh310 million.

The substation comprises four feeders (power lines) to serve Kwale County headquarters and adjacent customers, Kinango, Tiwi and Kombani areas.

The upcoming Kenya Power Kwale substation will relieve Diani substation that is currently serving these areas and provide alternative supply points to customers thereby improving the reliability of electricity supply.

“Network reliability and customer service excellence are one of our key focus areas as we undertake our role to provide electricity for economic growth. We are committed to ensure that these projects are completed within the set timelines and budget, to provide value to our customers,” said Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror.

He added, “Beyond Coast region, Kenya Power is also undertaking similar projects in other areas across the country, including network reinforcement projects to improve the resilience of the grid and to provide quality service to all electricity users.

“As we do this, we are also incorporating technology to ensure we have a smart grid and improved customer experience,” said Dr Siror. Bomani substation costs KShs455Million; Kwale substation costs KSh 310Million, completion in December 2026.

During the financial year ended June 2026, Kenya Power connected 411,710 new customers to the grid bringing the total customer base to 10.4 million customers.

The onboarding of new customers partly accounted for the 161.7 GWh increase in electricity sales during the year.

Recently, some 426 Engineers successfully completed the first phase of Kenya Power’s Graduate Trainee Program, marking a significant step by the Company to strengthen its workforce for improved service delivery.

The Engineers undertook a 4-month intensive classroom training at Kenya Power’s Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR). They will now be deployed to a five month-regional field rotation program where they will apply their knowledge and skills to strengthen operations, improve response times, and support the ongoing grid modernisation efforts.

Speaking during the Graduate Trainee phase one training closing ceremony, Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng) Siror urged the engineers to embrace learning and commitment to service delivery, in line with the Company’s aspirations to enhance customer experience.

“I want to congratulate all our new engineers for this great milestone in their career. As a Company, we view these young talents as great ambassadors of Kenya Power and as they commence operations, I am confident that they will strengthen the Company’s technical capacity to attain our strategic goals,” said Dr. Siror.

A total of 328 out of the 426 Graduate Engineers are specialised in electrical, while the rest are trained in diverse disciplines including geospatial, mechatronics, mechanical, civil engineering, and ICT. Their input to the existing Kenya Power teams is expected to build a strong pipeline of professionals driving Kenya’s energy sector.

They join the Company at a critical time when the customer base has expanded to 10.4 million customers, supported by growing demand for electricity and accelerated deployment of electrification projects across the country.

“To meet the growing needs of our customers, we are carrying out a lot of grid modernisation and digitisation projects. The knowledge and skills that the young engineers bring are critical to the actualisation of the Company’s aspiration to ride on technology and innovation in its next phase to provide better services and maintain its position as the leading energy utility in the region,” said Dr. Siror.
