Police arrest man ‘assaulting’ toddler in viral video

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed that a man captured in a viral video assaulting a toddler has been taken into police custody.

In the footage, which circulated widely on social media, the man is seen striking a young girl on the head with a cane while complaining about her academic performance. At one point, he is heard saying, “If it were this your head, I would correct it”.

The clip sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians, who demanded the man’s arrest.

In a statement posted on X, the DSVA said it became aware of the incident on Tuesday and immediately took action.

The agency said it successfully reached the child’s mother, who revealed that the matter had already been reported at Imota police station.

The mother and child were subsequently taken to the hospital for proper treatment, the agency said.

“Upon contacting officers at the Family Support Unit, the Agency was informed that the survivor’s mother had initially reported the matter to the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA),” the statement reads.

“Following the report, the alleged perpetrator was apprehended on Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026, and is currently in police custody, as the matter has now been escalated for further investigation.

“The survivor and her mother have also been referred to the General Hospital for immediate medical attention and further assessment.

“The Agency will continue to monitor the matter and provide the necessary support to the survivor and her mother as required.

“We appreciate members of the public who brought this matter to our attention.”
