A further look at the fallout from Manchester United’s latest defeat.
Manchester United supporters have had a lot to say since Lisandro Martinez vented his frustrations with the club’s board. Red Devils supporters have been busy on TalkingPoints discussing the future of Martinez, Michael Carrick, and Jason Wilcox.
I’ve picked out six of my favourite comments from fans in response to the latest fallout…
‘Martinez is showing professional pride and passion’
‘Davidmort1947’ writes that while Lisandro Martinez has ‘probably destroyed his chances of a new contract but he has shown commitment’.
The easiest thing for Martinez to do would be to say nothing. Footballers are often criticised for being mercenaries and only caring about their salary. This comment recognises a footballer willing to put himself above the parapet and take some criticism.
davidmort1947 6h Martinez is showing professional pride and passion, unlike some other players who are no more than mercenaries. He has probably destroyed his chances of a new contract at Old Trafford but he has shown commitment. 2 Reply Report
‘The players need to take some responsibility’
‘ianratcliffe1969’ writes that while the essence of Martinez’s comments are correct, the Manchester United players are ‘terrible’ and must take responsibility for their poor results.
This is important to factor into the discussion. Even with the shortcomings in the transfer market, this Manchester United team should be better than an atrocious record of two wins in nine games suggests.
ianratcliffe1969 5h Hes spot on, the board have not backed Carra, but the players need to take responsibility, they are terrible. No formation, no tactics, no press, we have regressed under Carra 1 Reply Report
‘Merely sacking Wilcox is not the answer’
‘niko’ notes Manchester United’s poor recruitment being a common theme for the club over the past decade. He says the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe must ultimately share responsibility for the failings, and that getting rid of Jason Wilcox will only partially address the problem, rather than fix it.
I think this is a really good ‘big picture’ take on the situation. Sacking Wilcox would be a popular move, but United will only be as good as his replacement. Nothing over the post-Ferguson era suggests that the Glazers and Ratcliffe would hire a new director who is capable of actually changing the situation. It’s a bleak reality.
niko 4h Merely sacking Wilcox is not the answer. Van Gaal said back then that United was being run by those who know next to nothing about football. Spot them from their atrocious recruitment of players. Who are they? Glazers in Tampa Bay, Ratcliffe of Monaco, and Ineos appointees in hiding from fans and players wrath. It ends when they quit! 1 Reply Report
‘This team is not fit’
‘epi2media’ cuts right to the biggest knock on Manchester United’s actual performances. ‘This team is not fit’, he writes, pointing to a lack of fight on the pitch.
United’s poor efforts are being shown up in the running statistics alongside the poor results. If United turn up and play with a lack of fight against Leeds at the weekend, this miserable week will become even more intolerable.
epi2media 7h This team is not fit. Every United player is quickly muscled off the ball in every player. They wait for the ball to come to them while the opposition goes towards the ball. No runs across defenders and there is no evidence of proper shooting or crossing practice…Sesko, Fernandez, Dalot,Amad,Zirkzee 🤔all of them – freeze when they get to the opp. area! 1 Reply Report
‘Somebody had to say it’
‘febced1’ offers the view that Lisandro Martinez’s outburst was ‘factual’, but ‘probably uttered on the wrong stage’. But he agrees that ‘somebody had to say it’.
This reflects the mood that United fans are actually quite pleased that a player had the temerity to call out the way the club is being run. Our TalkingPoints poll shows 92 per cent of fans support Martinez speaking up.
febced1 19h His comments are factual, although probably uttered on the wrong stage. This club is in crisis, and Licha acknowledges that. Somebody had to say it. Wazza should admit that the players were disrespectful through their on-field performance. 0 Reply Report
‘From the directors and owner’
‘chiderachristopher056’ expressed his view why Lisandro Martinez is right, pointing out that the owners and directors are the ones who are ultimately responsible for Manchester United’s problems.
Let’s face it, Martinez will probably be gone soon. His comments have probably hastened his departure.
United fans will still be stuck with the same problems, and the same owners and directors.
chiderachristopher056 11h His right because whatever that’s happening to us (United ❤️) is from the directors and owner’s 1 Reply Report
