Think of getting custom-made clothes, and likely imagine a ceremonial Savile Row-style experience with loads of measurements, fittings — and handsomely fair prices. Adedayo David Eweje is one creative designer reinventing the art of tailoring altogether and offering the same custom options that fit reasonable budgets.
Eweje is the founder of popular David Wej, an award-winning international premium lifestyle brand. In fact, he has been highly regarded as a leader in sartorial men’s fashion in Nigeria while his David Wej label has been recognised as Nigeria’s leading go-to brand for celebrities and high profile figures.
With recognition for distinctive traditionally inspired bespoke jacquard suits, classic shirts and accessories, Eweje’s craftsmanship was always at its best with the cut, shaped, and finished locally in Lagos to blend African tailoring with the standards of Savile Row and Biella. Since 2008, he has built his brand from the ground up. It has transitioned from a startup operating out of a car trunk on the busy street of Oyin Jolayemi, Victoria Island, Lagos to a thriving premium menswear label with seven global stores, including standalone London, UK flagship store, and a thriving e-commerce presence.
The brand’s longevity — spanning almost 19 years — has enabled it to grow alongside numerous clients who have moved from executive roles to managing director positions. Based on this, Eweje now focuses on redefining luxury menswear. He is catering to the needs of these high-end clients and expanding his brand’s international presence with high-level tailoring techniques including full and half canvas construction rather than bespoke methods for most of his products. This has given birth to the David Wej Signature —his luxury extension and a new benchmark in modern tailoring.
On Saturday October 10, Eweje threw open his Lekki flagship store for the launch of this new exciting chapter in luxury fashion. The event, attended by crème of Nigeria’s business, political and lifestyle circles, was also for the exclusive viewing of the Signature’s new Collection including accessories such as pure silk, cashmere ties/cravats and handmade shoes.
For the collection, the fabrics used have a mixture of Italian wool, English cotton, and cashmere sourced from renowned mills and artisans including Loro Piana, Brown Aaron, Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Thomas Mason, Kerry Knoll and Drago. The choice of these fabrics, according to 49-year old Eweje, is driven by the need to meet luxury standards while infusing fun and personality into the brand’s customizable services. Sure, they will all fit to perfection —but these new David Wej Signature’s buzzy brands are less about lavishness, and more about ensuring every piece of your wardrobe feels authentic to you and your personal style.
