KAMPALA, UGANDA — Police in Kampala have arrested three suspected members of a gang believed to be behind a series of robberies targeting people carrying money on motorcycles in areas of Kampala Metropolitan Police East.
The arrests followed investigations into the robbery of a cashier from Tilupati, who was attacked on August 17, 2026, along Bukoto Heights while travelling to a bank.
According to police, the cashier was riding to the bank when two men travelling on a motorcycle intercepted her and grabbed her bag containing about Shs22 million before fleeing.
The case was reported at Kira Road Police Station, prompting investigations that led to the arrest of the suspects.
“On September 19, 2026, police arrested two suspects and recovered one motorcycle believed to have been used in the robberies. On September 24, another suspect was arrested and two additional motorcycles were recovered,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
The suspects have been identified as Byanyima Sadic, Waibale Joseph and Kisongode Ivan, who police allege participated in the robberies as motorcycle riders.
Preliminary investigations have also linked the suspects to other robbery incidents in Kampala.
Police said the gang is suspected of stealing about Shs10 million from a person carrying money from a bank in the Mpererwe area in January 2026.
The suspects have also allegedly been linked to the robbery of a Nigerian national in the vicinity of the US Embassy on August 24, 2026.
Police have so far impounded four motorcycles, all reportedly Haojue motorcycles, believed to have been used by the gang. They are registration numbers UMA 366LZ, UMA 018MX, UMA 073NP and UMA 018NX.
Owoyesigyire said investigations indicate that the suspects did not operate alone, with other members of the gang still at large.
“Investigations further indicate that the gang operated with the assistance of other suspects who are still at large. Police are actively pursuing them to establish their individual roles and bring them to justice,” he said.
The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue and will be taken to court upon completion of the inquiries.
Kampala Metropolitan Police said operations targeting criminal gangs involved in robberies of people carrying money and other valuables are ongoing.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
