The first ever Dragon Ball LEGO set is R2799 in South Africa

LEGO has secured a partnership with one of the biggest franchises in the world in the form of Dragon Ball, and the pair have revealed their first product in the form of 11390: Dragon Ball: Shenron & Goku.

Overseas, this display piece will cost $179.99, €139.99, or £129.99 depending on your region. Here in South Africa, however, a store page was just created revealing the local price of R2 799. On top of this, the set will also be exclusive to LEGO Certified Stores and its online platform.

To put that price into perspective, local pricing is usually based on the Euro. At the time of writing, €139.99 converts to around R2 600. A local increase of R199 isn’t ideal, but it’s to be expected these days, especially for larger sets.

On that note, this example has 1 764 pieces and comes with one minifigure in the form of Goku as a child, complete with the Flying Nimbus and Power Pole. If it wasn’t clear: This set is based on the original Dragon Ball run, and not the more popular Dragon Ball Z or the current Dragon Ball Super.

Assembling the 1 764 pieces makes for a display that is 32x24x26 centimetres (height x length x width). You will notice, from the gallery below, that this isn’t the full body of Shenron, but instead just a portion of him rising from the gathered Dragon Balls which are also included in the set.

11390: Dragon Ball: Shenron & Goku launches on 1st November in most regions, including South Africa. We’re sure it will be a success and may sell out, but if you’re a Dragon Ball fan coming into LEGO, don’t fret.

Unlike other toy makers, LEGO will continually produce its current sets and release more to meet market demands. If the first wave sells out more will arrive in stores shortly. As other brands have fans fighting in toy aisles over collectibles, LEGO will always keep a set in stock until its retirement date, which is usually two or three years after its first release.
