Over 714 farmers in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State are to benefit from the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Agricultural Development Grants.
Aside from the financial grants, the Commission is also going to provide equipment for mechanised agriculture as well as high-breed seedlings for the farmers.
The grant, which is being attracted by the Mayor of Awka North Local Government Area, Chief Thank God Anago, is aimed at assisting local farmers and boosting food production in the Council Area.
According to Anago, who recently won his second-term election in last Saturday’s Local Government election, explained that the era of non-farmers hijacking the program is gone, adding that the Council took time to identify the real farmers through a painstaking enumeration of the farmers in their respective Communities.
“I am going to improve on what I have done in the past, which is developmental projects for the people”
“We have a partnership with the South East Development Commission ( SEDC), and there is this grant that they are bringing that is going to be impactful on the people from the next two months”
“They are also bringing equipment for mechanised agriculture for the real farmers, and we have taken enumeration of the prospective beneficiaries” he said.
A breakdown of the number shows that Oba- Ofemili Community has 120 farmers who are going to benefit, while Ugbenu has 100 and
Ogbenen has 80 farmers.
Others include Achala, where it is being targeted at 200 farmers; Amanuke, 85 farmers, as well as Mgbakwu and Amansea Communities having 75 and 64 farmers respectively.
Anago also explained that the program is not just for root crop farming but also livestock in order to ensure that all types of agricultural produce are enhanced
He announced that farming aids such as fertilisers would also be provided, adding that at the flag-off of the agricultural program, there shall be forms of sensitisation and awareness campaigns to educate the farmers on the latest farming techniques.
“They would be subjected to some training programs and campaigns where they would be exposed to the latest developments in farming to keep them in compliance with those methods “, he said.
