Nigerian Dancer Risks Seven Days of Nonstop Dancing in Audacious Bid to Break World Record

A Nigerian professional dancer is attempting to make history by completing a continuous seven-day dance marathon in Lagos, targeting a total of 168 hours of movement.

Benjamin Daniel, popularly known as Ben Dancer, began the challenge on Tuesday, September 22, with the goal of surpassing the existing record for the longest individual dance marathon by 41 hours.

If successful, his attempt would represent one of the most demanding endurance challenges ever undertaken by a Nigerian performer.

Current Record Stands at 127 Hours

The existing record for the longest individual dance marathon was set in 2023 by Indian dancer Srushti Sudhir Jagtap, who danced for 127 hours at the age of 16.

Jagtap’s performance was centred largely on kathak, one of India’s major classical dance traditions.

Ben Dancer, who is 33 and has spent 18 years dancing professionally, is seeking to push the benchmark significantly higher with his planned 168-hour performance.

However, Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed whether his attempt qualifies as an official record. The organisation has been contacted for clarification.

Lagos Crowds Turn Attempt Into a Major Spectacle

The challenge has attracted growing crowds at Freedom Park in Lagos, where supporters have gathered to watch the dancer and document his progress.

Young Nigerians have been recording the performance on their phones, while some have joined in with dancing from behind the barriers.

Uche Anumudu, one of those following the attempt, described the experience as an emotional one.

She said watching Ben Dancer reach each stage of the challenge had made her feel proud and grateful.

Performance Celebrates Nigeria’s Musical Diversity

The marathon is not being presented solely as a test of physical endurance. Ben Dancer’s team says the performance is also intended to showcase Nigeria’s cultural diversity.

Afrobeats has featured heavily throughout the challenge, alongside musical styles including fuji, jazz and zouk.

At different points, the dancer has also changed into traditional Nigerian clothing, including agbada and dashiki.

With Nigeria home to more than 250 ethnic groups and an enormous range of cultural traditions, his team says the performance is designed to reflect the country’s varied identity while demonstrating the physical limits of dance.

Strict Preparation Behind the Challenge

Ben Dancer underwent extensive preparation before beginning the marathon, according to his team.

His training included changes to his diet, increased carbohydrate intake and a focus on cardiovascular fitness designed to prepare his body for the prolonged physical demands of the attempt.

During the marathon, he has been consuming fluids and small amounts of food while following the permitted rest schedule.

For every continuous hour of activity, he is allowed five minutes of rest. Rather than stopping every hour, however, he has been accumulating those rest periods and taking several hours of dancing before using the accumulated time.

A medical team has also remained on site at Freedom Park to monitor him and provide assistance if required.

Supporters Amazed by His Changing Energy Levels

The prolonged performance has produced mixed reactions among spectators, with many expressing admiration while also worrying about the physical strain involved.

Moronumubo Akodu, who has visited the venue repeatedly, described the attempt as extraordinary but said she remained concerned about its impact on the dancer’s body.

Another supporter, Emmanuel Ulelu, said Ben Dancer’s condition appeared to change noticeably during the early stages.

He recalled seeing signs of exhaustion on the second day and questioned how the dancer would maintain the pace.

Yet when Ulelu returned during the fifth day, after roughly 16 hours of the latest stage of the performance, he said Ben Dancer appeared surprisingly energetic.

Social Media Fuels Growing Interest

The attempt has also gained momentum online, with videos circulating widely across social media and encouraging more people to visit Freedom Park.

The growing audience has transformed the venue into something resembling a large street celebration, with supporters gathering around the stage to encourage the dancer.

The public response has added another dimension to an attempt that is already being watched as both an endurance challenge and a celebration of Nigerian culture.

Nigeria’s Growing Obsession With World Records

Ben Dancer’s challenge comes during a period of heightened Nigerian interest in Guinness World Records.

That enthusiasm intensified in 2023 when Nigerian chef Hilda Baci cooked continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes in Lagos, with Guinness World Records officially recognising her achievement at the time.

Her performance generated widespread attention and inspired a wave of Nigerians to explore their own potential record attempts.

Guinness World Records subsequently said it received more than 1,500 applications from Nigeria within two months of Baci’s cook-a-thon. The proposed challenges covered activities ranging from reading and singing to crocheting.

Aiming for the Finish Line

Ben Dancer’s target is to complete the full 168 hours early on Wednesday morning, bringing seven days of continuous dancing to an end.

Whether Guinness World Records ultimately certifies the performance remains to be seen.

For now, the attempt has already captured significant public attention, bringing together endurance, entertainment and Nigeria’s diverse cultural traditions in a challenge that could establish a new global benchmark for individual dance marathons.
