Horse racing fanatics across the country will be flocking to Karibib in the Erongo region tomorrow to witness the Karibib Horseracing Bonanza.
The event’s organising committee, which comprises members of Karibib Town Council Sports Club, Professor Supporters Club (PSC), and Eastern Sport Promotion CC, has confirmed to New Era Sports that 80% of the country’s top racehorses from various clubs will be landing in Karibib to compete in 18 plates.
PSC’s Timo Mujeu, one of the organising committee members, said the N$ 250 000 competition is aimed at reviving the sport of racing in the great Erongo region, which is in line with the decentralisation of racing in the country.
“This is our first event in the Erongo area. We have assisted Karibib Town Council Sports Club in developing a horseracing track. We will appoint an independent commission of three to review compliance with the rules and regulations,” he said.
The commission, Mujeu said, will rate the race track as well as the race event itself, which should be a standard for PSC’s racing events going forward.
Mujeu added that the hall of fame has been created in remembrance of horses which have fulfilled duties for the club in the past or which are still fulfilling duties for the club.
“All 18 races have been named after a specific special horse,” he said.
Mujeu further said that PSC, as a club, will boost an arsenal of seven horses across various divisions.
He mentioned the club’s legendary horse called Bin Laden will represent the club in race 17, which is the main race for Nambred horses covering the distance of 2 000 metres (m), while King Resano will feature in the Import A division (2 000m), which is the main plate for thoroughbred horses.
A fierce battle is expected in the Nambred main race (17), where Okahandja’s Katiti Komambo has dominated the past couple of competitions, including the recent Miss Namibia Challenge Cup in Gobabis.
The Okahandja-based horse will face regular opponents in the name of Boma, Bokkie, Hotline, Soldier Boy and Bin Laden.
In the Import Open 2000 m, Pee Jay is in the mix and will be up in arms against Unbroken Promises, Desert Fox, Three Cheers, Golden Resano, Torix Night Whisper, Action Time and Crystal Maiden.
The winning horse owner is the Nambred main plate, which will pocket N$10 000 cash, while N$11 250 will be paid to the winner in the thoroughbred category.
The first race is expected to start at 10h00 with the country’s top maiden horses battling out for top honours in the grade named after PSC’s Tate Omukuendata.
Race two is named after Shadaloo, while races three and four are named after Professor Junior and Big Blue, respectively.
Bright Eye and Voltarra are named after the fifth and sixth races among the club’s legendary horses.
Race 17 will be honoured after Professor, a club-decorated horse who triumphed with many accolades in Namibia, while Race 18 is honouring King Resano.
