Muslim engineers urged to prioritise ethics, public safety

The Muslim Engineers Association (TMEA) has charged engineers to place professional competence, accountability and public safety above personal interests, warning that unethical practices could undermine public trust and endanger lives.

The National President of TMEA, Engr. Gbadegesin Osuolale, gave the charge at the inauguration of the association’s pioneer National Executive Council in Lagos.

The event, organised under the theme, “Engineering Excellence, Ethical Leadership and Service to Humanity Through Islamic Values,” marked a new phase for the professional body, which aims to promote ethical engineering practice, mentorship, research and collaboration among Muslim engineers.

Osuolale described engineering as a profession founded on public trust, urging practitioners to resist unethical pressure arising from contracts, politics and personal interests.

He said every structure, system, software and technology developed by an engineer could have consequences for human lives and remain in use for generations.

“Every code that you write, every order that you sign and everything that is a product of your work has to have a moral foundation,” he said.

According to him, TMEA would reach out to Muslim engineers across Nigeria and encourage them to deploy their expertise toward solving national development challenges.

He said the association would focus on areas including energy, housing, transportation, water, agriculture and manufacturing, while promoting emerging technologies, research and practical solutions.
