FREE STATE — A Bothaville pastor has been sentenced to life imprisonment following his conviction for the rape of a minor, bringing a definitive end to a high-profile child abuse case in the Free State. The severe penalty ensures the removal of the 39-year-old clergyman from the community, marking a significant victory for regional law enforcement and child protection advocates.
The case centered around Vusimuzi Xapa, whose guilty verdict was handed down on 26 August. The judicial process concluded the following week when Xapa was formally sentenced to life in prison on Friday, 28 August 2026. The maximum sentence was delivered by Magistrate Mahlatsi during proceedings at the Bothaville Regional Court.
Securing the conviction required a rigorous and multi-agency approach to child protection and criminal justice. Following the suspect’s initial arrest, the docket was assigned to Warrant Officer Mandie Jacobs of the Welkom Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. Jacobs spearheaded the intricate investigation, working in close collaboration with Advocate Keke Machogo of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to build an unassailable case against the religious leader.
In the wake of the successful prosecution, top law enforcement officials praised the specialized units responsible for taking a dangerous predator off the streets. Lejweleputswa District Commissioner Major General (Dr) Tholie Afonso publicly commended the outstanding work and relentless dedication of the investigating officers and prosecutors. Dr. Afonso highlighted the team’s commitment to combating gender-based violence and safeguarding vulnerable minors within the district, noting that the life sentence serves as a stern warning to other would-be offenders.
