New information has surfaced about a disagreement among church members ahead of a fatal bus crash on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway that took 24 lives.
A number of worshippers wished to delay their trip until Sunday morning, but the group’s elders insisted on departing on Saturday evening as planned. The 47 worshippers had journeyed to Lugari, Kakamega County, to attend their bishop’s funeral.
Once the service ended, they were divided over whether to start the trip back to Mombasa that evening or to rest overnight and travel the next morning.
While some members favoured leaving on Sunday, the elders refused to alter the plans.
They insisted that the group must stick to the initial schedule, despite protests from those who preferred to hold off.
Michael Musala, a survivor now receiving treatment at Makindu Level 4 Hospital, said the elders used their greater numbers to brush aside the suggestion of postponing the trip.
He noted that those favouring a morning departure were outnumbered and could not persuade the elders to rethink.
Musala said the elders proceeded to organise for the bus to be brought, which led members to begin boarding even though the disagreement remained unsettled.
The worshippers climbed into the vehicle one by one as departure preparations went on.The group’s secretary also revealed that he almost missed the bus owing to the chaos around the boarding.
The worshippers left Lugari at about 4pm on Saturday, hoping to reach home safely.
Their journey ended in tragedy, however, when the bus crashed along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in the early hours of Sunday.
The crash killed 24 people and left several other passengers hurt.
The bodies of the victims were moved to Mtito Andei Hospital mortuary, while the wounded were admitted to Makindu Level 4 Hospital for care.
Musala was among those who endured a personal loss in the disaster, as his sister perished in the crash.
He recalled her as a compassionate woman who had cared for him like a mother when he was a child.
The tragedy has left families and members of the affected church communities grieving, as survivors continue to recount the events leading up to the fatal journey.
