Bruno Fernandes struck a superb hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from conceding first to secure an emphatic 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.
Ipswich, buoyed by their win over Sunderland on their return to the top flight last weekend, made an impressive start. Abdul Fatawu produced excellent work on the wing before finding Leif Davis, who fired a well-taken half-volley past the United goalkeeper.
The visitors’ advantage did not last, however, as a costly mistake allowed United to seize control of the contest.
Marcelino Nunez lost his footing as Ipswich attempted to attack from a corner, leaving United with an opportunity to counter. Matheus Cunha carried the move forward and supplied Fernandes, who converted to bring the hosts level.
United completed the turnaround when Harry Maguire’s effort took a decisive deflection off Jacob Greaves and went into the net for an own goal.
The ball had struck Maguire’s arms during the build-up, but the goal was permitted because the England defender was not the player credited with scoring it.
Greaves endured another difficult moment just five minutes later when he brought down Cunha inside the penalty area. Fernandes stepped forward and confidently dispatched the resulting spot-kick to give United a commanding 3-1 lead.
Fernandes secured his hat-trick after Ipswich blocked attempts from both Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo. The loose ball fell invitingly for the United captain, who reacted quickest to score his third goal of the match.
The Portuguese midfielder then turned provider, delivering a pass over the Ipswich defence to release Mbeumo. The forward’s shot struck the crossbar before bouncing over the line, extending United’s advantage to 5-1.
Ipswich continued pushing despite the heavy deficit and eventually found a second goal late in the game.
Julio Enciso pulled the ball back for Chuba Akpom, who had been introduced as a half-time substitute, to complete the scoring at 5-2.
The result capped a dominant response from Manchester United after their early setback, with captain Fernandes at the heart of their attacking display.
