The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, to discuss Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and ways to strengthen the country’s democratic process.
Obi disclosed this on Tuesday, following his visit to the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria.
He said the meeting was held at the invitation of the Canadian High Commission and focused on Nigeria’s upcoming elections and Canada’s continued support for strengthening democratic institutions.

According to Obi, the discussions also covered trade and investment, economic development and education.
He said the meeting further addressed the need for affirmative measures to increase the participation and representation of women in Nigerian politics.
Obi reiterated his position that a well-governed, peaceful and economically prosperous Nigeria would serve the strategic interests of Canada and create opportunities for stronger bilateral relations.
“I reiterated my conviction that a well-governed, peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria is firmly in Canada’s strategic interest,” Obi said.
He added that a Nigeria that works for its citizens would be better positioned to unlock its economic potential while deepening partnerships with Canada and other countries across Africa.
The former governor also stressed the need to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and increase citizen participation in governance.
“We also discussed the urgent need to strengthen our democratic institutions, deepen citizen participation, and build a political system where every Nigerian, regardless of gender, background or circumstance, has a meaningful opportunity to contribute to governance,” he said.
Obi said he looked forward to further engagements with Canada’s diplomatic and business community, particularly on initiatives capable of contributing to Nigeria’s economic development, security and inclusiveness.
