15 Best Horror Games to Play This Halloween, Solo or With Friends

Halloween is a good excuse to try a horror game you've been putting off, revisit a classic, or find something that turns an ordinary gaming night into a memorable one.

The challenge is choosing the right game. Some rely on psychological tension and unsettling stories, while others put you in a room with friends, a limited supply of equipment, and something dangerous hunting you.

We've selected 15 games worth considering for Halloween 2026, with their platforms and the type of experience each offers. Whether you're new to horror or looking for something genuinely unsettling, here's where to start.

5 New Horror Movies and Shows to Stream This WeekendFrom a supernatural crime mystery to a brutal new Evil Dead film, these horror releases bring fresh scares to your weekend watchlist.

/1. Resident Evil Requiem

• Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
• Best for: Modern survival horror with a mix of tension and action.

Released in February 2026, Resident Evil Requiem is a natural starting point for anyone looking for a major horror release this Halloween. Capcom's ninth mainline entry follows FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and series veteran Leon S. Kennedy, whose different approaches to survival shape the experience.

Grace's sections focus on vulnerability, investigation, and managing limited resources, while Leon brings a more action-oriented approach. That contrast makes the game appealing to players who enjoy both traditional survival horror and more direct combat.

If you want one substantial horror game to spend the weekend with, this is a strong choice. Just remember that it's a single-player experience rather than a game you can complete with friends online.

/2. Silent Hill 2

• Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
• Best for: Psychological horror and an unsettling story.

Sometimes the scariest thing in a horror game is what you don't understand. In the Silent Hill 2 remake, James Sunderland travels to a fog-covered town after receiving a letter from his deceased wife. What begins as a search quickly becomes a disturbing journey through grief, guilt, and the unknown.

The remake combines expanded environments, updated combat, and unsettling sound design to make exploration feel dangerous. Rather than relying exclusively on jump scares, it builds tension through the environment and the mystery surrounding James.

Choose this if you prefer psychological horror that gives you something to think about after the credits roll. It's a single-player game, so it's best suited to a night when you can concentrate on the story

/3. Phasmophobia

• Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
• Best for: Ghost hunting with friends.

If you'd rather share the scares than experience them alone, Phasmophobia deserves a place on your list. You and your teammates investigate haunted locations, gather evidence, and identify the type of ghost you're dealing with before it becomes too dangerous.

The challenge is working out what you're facing while managing the risk of staying too long. A routine investigation can quickly become chaotic when a ghost starts hunting, and communicating with your team becomes just as important as collecting evidence.

The game supports cross-play between PC and console players, making it particularly useful for groups with different gaming systems. Choose it if your idea of Halloween involves friends, headsets, and plenty of nervous shouting.

/4. Lethal Company

• Platform: PC
• Best for: Multiplayer horror that can go hilariously wrong.

Not every Halloween game needs to take itself seriously. In Lethal Company, you and your crew explore abandoned industrial facilities on distant moons, collecting scrap to meet a company quota while trying to survive whatever is lurking nearby.

The real tension comes from deciding when to leave. One more trip for valuable scrap could help your team meet its target, but staying too long can cost you everything. The result is a mixture of suspense, teamwork, and spectacularly bad decisions.

It's an excellent choice for a group that enjoys unpredictable multiplayer sessions, although you'll need a PC because the game is not officially available on consoles.

/5. Alan Wake 2

• Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
• Best for: Cinematic horror and supernatural mystery.

If you want a horror game with the atmosphere of a psychological thriller, Alan Wake 2 is worth considering. The story follows writer Alan Wake and FBI agent Saga Anderson as their investigations draw them into a supernatural mystery that blurs the line between reality and nightmare.

Its appeal lies in the combination of exploration, survival combat, and a story that gradually reveals its secrets. You'll need to pay attention to clues and environments rather than simply moving from one enemy encounter to the next.

Choose this if you enjoy stories that make you question what is happening and want a more cinematic experience. It's a single-player game, so don't expect to investigate its mysteries with a co-op partner.

/6. Dead Space (2023 remake)

• Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
• Best for: Sci-fi horror and tense combat.

A damaged spaceship is a terrible place to be stranded, particularly when its corridors are filled with grotesque creatures. That's the situation Isaac Clarke faces in Dead Space, as he tries to survive aboard the USG Ishimura after a catastrophic incident.

Combat is more demanding than simply shooting everything that moves. You must manage ammunition, choose your shots carefully, and decide when fighting is worth the risk. The ship's industrial environments and sound design make even routine exploration unsettling.

This is a strong pick if you want horror with more combat than Alien: Isolation but still want to feel vulnerable. Headphones will help you appreciate its atmospheric sound design.

/7. The Outlast Trials

• Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
• Best for: Co-op survival horror.

In The Outlast Trials, you become a test subject in a disturbing series of experiments. Your goal is to complete objectives and survive, often by sneaking past enemies or escaping when confrontation isn't an option.

You can play alone or team up with other players, making it a good alternative for groups that want more structured challenges than Phasmophobia offers. Cooperation matters, but it won't necessarily save you when a trial starts going wrong.

Choose this if you enjoy intense pursuit sequences and survival challenges. Its graphic violence and disturbing themes make it better suited to adults who are comfortable with extreme horror.

/8. Little Nightmares III

• Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2
• Best for: A spooky adventure with a friend.

For players who want something eerie without committing to a traditional survival horror game, Little Nightmares III offers a different experience. You follow Low and Alone, two children trying to escape the Spiral, a disturbing world filled with strange creatures, dangerous environments, and puzzles.

The game's appeal comes from its unsettling visual design and the way ordinary surroundings become threatening. You can play alone with an AI companion or team up with a friend through online co-op.

It's a particularly good option for two players who enjoy solving puzzles and exploring together. Bandai Namco also offers a Friend's Pass, allowing eligible players to invite a friend to join them without both needing to purchase the game. Check the platform-specific conditions before playing.

/9. Until Dawn

• Platforms: PC, PS5
• Best for: An interactive slasher movie.

Ever watched a horror film and wondered why a character made such a terrible decision? Until Dawn lets you take control of those decisions.

The story follows a group of friends whose reunion at a remote mountain lodge turns into a fight for survival. Your choices influence how the story unfolds and which characters make it through the night.

It's particularly suited to a Halloween gathering because everyone can debate what the characters should do next. You can pass the controller around or watch together as the consequences of each decision play out.

Choose this if you prefer branching stories and suspense to demanding combat. It's a single-player experience, so the group fun comes from watching and making decisions together rather than playing an online co-op campaign.
