People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has declared that he is prepared to run for President in the 2027 General Election, saying he believes he is among the leaders best equipped to take charge of the country.
Speaking during an appearance on Citizen TV’s JKLive show on Wednesday night, Nyoro said he would be ready to assume the presidency if given the opportunity to lead the opposition in the 2027 race against President William Ruto.
Asked by show host Jeff Koinange whether he was running for President, Nyoro said he was prepared for the country’s top job, while stopping short of formally declaring his candidacy.
“I don’t believe there is a person more prepared in Kenya to lead this country than Ndindi Nyoro,” he said.
The Kiharu Member of Parliament said his preparedness was driven by his efforts to understand the country’s challenges and develop solutions that could be implemented if he eventually took over the reins of government.
He gave education as an example, saying that if he became President, his administration would move within three months to provide free basic education in all day secondary schools.
“If I got there tomorrow, in three months’ time, we would offer free basic education to Kenyans in all day secondary schools. In terms of being prepared, I am prepared to be anything, including the president of Kenya,” Nyoro said.
The MP, who has increasingly featured in discussions about Kenya’s post-2027 political leadership, however, acknowledged the difficulties facing the opposition as it seeks to mount a united challenge against Ruto.
Nyoro said Kenya has “an abundance of aspirants” but few leaders who were genuinely preparing themselves for leadership.
“I decided I need to capacity-build myself, look at the areas that we need to tackle as a country, so that if that chance was to come, I would not waste a day,” he said.
He argued that defeating the incumbent President would require opposition leaders to unite around a common cause rather than pursue individual political ambitions.
“The challenge ahead needs a united front; the challenges of our country is not a singular solution, we need to hold hands all of us to tackle the problem,” he said.
Asked directly whether he could defeat Ruto in a presidential contest, Nyoro offered an emphatic response: “Hands down!”
Nyoro's remarks are likely to fuel speculation over the field of potential presidential contenders ahead of the 2027 election, with opposition parties expected to face the delicate task of settling on a single candidate capable of mounting a serious challenge to Ruto.
