The retirement of the US Navy's Grumman C-2A Greyhound marks a fundamental shift in carrier strike group logistics. The shift to a tiltrotor puzzles many mainstream aviation observers because the V-22 Osprey actually carries less payload over a shorter unrefueled distance than the airframe it replaces. For 60 years, the carrier onboard delivery (COD) mission relied on conventional turboprops capable of navigating the high-stress environment of catapult launches and arrested landings.
