…Says state cannot afford political isolation
Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has called on political stakeholders across party lines in the state to unite behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, insisting that Anambra cannot afford to isolate itself from the political developments at the federal level.
Soludo made the call on Sunday in Awka during the inauguration of the Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council in Anambra State, where he described the President’s re-election as a strategic political decision in the best interest of the state and its people.
The governor said Anambra, given its historical contributions to Nigeria’s political, economic and intellectual development, must remain actively engaged with the Federal Government rather than pursue a politics of isolation.
According to him, the state is too consequential to be disconnected from national political developments, stressing that its development aspirations require strategic partnerships with the Federal Government.
Soludo explained that his support for Tinubu was informed by considerations beyond party affiliations and temporary political sentiments, noting that the overriding concern should be the long-term interests of Anambra and Nigeria.
He recalled that his political position had consistently favoured cooperation among progressive political forces, arguing that the inability of opposition parties to unite behind a common presidential candidate had historically weakened their chances of defeating the ruling party.
The governor also urged political actors to distinguish between emotional reactions and strategic political calculations, maintaining that the interest of Anambra should take precedence over partisan disagreements.
Soludo further argued that supporting Tinubu’s re-election would strengthen the state’s relationship with the Federal Government and improve its prospects of attracting the necessary interventions for critical development projects.
He specifically identified erosion control and other major infrastructure challenges as areas requiring substantial federal support, pointing out that the financial resources of the Anambra State Government alone were insufficient to address the scale of the problems.
“We want a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. At the same time, we want a prosperous homeland. And we need a strategic partnership with the Centre in order to make this happen,” he said.
The governor also made a case for political cooperation among members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, All Progressives Congress, APC, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Accord Party, particularly those seeking elective positions in the state and at the National Assembly.
He encouraged candidates and political stakeholders to work together with members of the governing political party at the federal level, rather than allow party differences to undermine common interests.
Chukwuma Charles Soludo, who recalled his longstanding involvement in progressive political movements, said the need for unity among progressives had become more compelling as the country approaches another presidential election.
He also referenced the political history of Nigeria since 1979, arguing that the rotation of presidential power between the North and South should be considered in assessing the country’s political future.
According to him, the South currently has an opportunity to complete its expected tenure in the presidency before power returns to the North, making the 2027 election an important strategic consideration.
The governor disclosed that arrangements were already underway to establish a comprehensive campaign structure across the state, with political stakeholders expected to mobilise at the grassroots and ward levels.
He said the campaign council would operate as an inclusive movement, welcoming interested individuals and groups irrespective of their political affiliations.
Soludo expressed confidence that a united political front would strengthen Tinubu’s re-election prospects, adding that the political future of Anambra and the welfare of its people informed his decision to support the President.
He urged members of the newly inaugurated campaign council to take the mobilisation seriously and work collectively towards achieving the objective.
For Soludo, the central message was that Anambra’s political and economic interests are better served through strategic engagement and cooperation with the Federal Government than through political isolation.
