US Elections: 5 Things Nigerians Should Watch As Americans Vote

As millions of voters in America head to the polls for the 2026 midterm elections, the outcome could reshape the country’s political direction, and affect its relations with other countries in the world, including Nigeria.

The elections, held halfway through US President Donald Trump’s 4-year tenure, are expected to determine the members of the Congress for the remainder of his presidency.

Although Trump is not on the ballot, the control of the United States Congress is. The Congress, which is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate, writes the country’s laws and controls federal spending.

The elections are also widely regarded as a referendum on his administration’s performance, with voters deciding whether Republicans will retain their majorities or Democrats will gain control of either chamber of Congress.

According to Al Jazeera, approximately 210 million registered eligible voters will determine all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Voters in 36 states will also elect governors.

Given Nigeria’s longstanding relationship with the US in areas like security, trade, healthcare, education and diplomatic engagement, the outcome of the Midterm elections would be worth paying attention to.

Here are 5 things Nigerians should watch as Americans Vote.

1. Control of Congress and Trump’s Political Influence

One of the biggest issues in the elections is whether Republicans will retain control of Congress or lose their majorities to the opposition Democratic Party.

Republicans hold majorities in both chambers, with 218 seats against the Democrats’ 214, while an independent member caucuses with Republicans. Two seats are vacant.

Losing either would give Democrats the power to block legislation and launch investigations into Trump’s administration. Democrats need to gain 3 seats in the house and four in the republic to take control of the respective chambers.

A change in congressional leadership could make it more difficult for Trump to advance his legislative agenda, particularly as Congress controls federal spending, approves legislation and exercises oversight over the executive branch.

For Nigeria, the outcome could influence the direction of American foreign policy, including congressional decisions on international assistance, security partnerships and diplomatic engagement with African countries.

2. US Foreign Policy and Nigeria’s Security Cooperation

Nigeria and the United States maintain security cooperation covering counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, military training and regional stability.

The outcome of the elections could influence the direction of America’s foreign policy, particularly its engagement with countries facing security challenges.

However, Washington’s approach to Nigeria has also involved concerns about religious freedom, human rights and the country’s response to insecurity.

A change in congressional control could affect how American lawmakers scrutinise the administration’s foreign policy decisions, including military assistance and security partnerships.

For Nigeria, this makes the election particularly significant as developments in Washington could influence the priorities and conditions guiding future security cooperation.

**3. Foreign Aid and Healthcare Funding **

Another major issue Nigerians should watch is foreign assistance and development funding in healthcare.

Historically, the United States has supported several public health and development programs in Nigeria, particularly in areas such as HIV/AIDS prevention, malaria control, maternal healthcare and humanitarian assistance.

The Trump administration’s changes to American foreign assistance have raised concerns about the continuity of development programmes across several countries.

As Congress plays an important role in approving federal spending and determining funding priorities, a change in its composition could therefore influence future debates about foreign assistance, including the funding of health and development programs in Nigeria.

Decisions taken in Washington could have implications for access to healthcare services and other development interventions, especially for Nigerian communities and organisations that benefit from US-backed initiatives.

4. Immigration Policies and Nigerians in the United States

Immigration is another major issue Nigerians should pay attention to as Americans vote.

The Trump administration has made immigration enforcement and border security central parts of its domestic agenda, introducing measures that have affected foreign nationals seeking to enter or remain in the country.

These policies are particularly relevant to Nigerians who travel to the United States for education, employment, business and family reunification.

A change in congressional control could therefore shape debates surrounding immigration restrictions, visa policies and the treatment of foreign nationals.

For Nigerians living in the United States or hoping to relocate there, the outcome could impact how Congress oversees immigration rules, visa policies, and agreements that require African nations to accept deportees.

**5. Trade Relations and Economic Implications **

Trade relations is another issue worth monitoring for Nigeria.

Both Nigeria and the US maintain trade and investment relationships across several sectors, including energy, agriculture, technology and manufacturing.

An issue of particular interest is the future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides eligible African countries with preferential access to the American market.

The trade programme, scheduled to expire on December 31, 2026, makes its renewal an important issue for African economies.

Congress will have a role in determining whether the programme is extended and the conditions attached to its continuation.

For Nigerian exporters and businesses seeking access to the American market, decisions surrounding the programme could influence future trade opportunities.

Additionally, Trump’s economic policies, including tariffs and trade restrictions, could have wider implications for international markets, investment and the global economy.

Although the 2026 US midterm elections are primarily concerned with domestic political control, their implications could extend beyond America’s borders.

Decisions made in the election could influence important areas of bilateral relations with Nigeria, including security cooperation, foreign assistance, trade and immigration.

While the election outcome alone may not immediately change existing policies, the balance of power in Congress could shape the decisions and priorities of the Trump administration during its remaining two years.

As an important diplomatic and economic partner, the United States remains a country whose political direction Nigeria will have reason to watch closely.
