Hit-and-run victim injured in Ikorodu as truck rams median in Palmgrove

An elderly man identified as Muhammad Bello sustained severe injuries in a hit-and-run accident in Ikorodu, while an empty gas truck later rammed into a road median at Palmgrove along Ikorodu Road, Lagos State.

According to the statement issued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, the two separate incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, prompting emergency response teams from the agency to intervene at both locations.

At about 2:10 p.m., the LRT Lion Squad stationed at Agbowa was dispatched to Agbowa Community, inward Itoikin Road, Ikorodu, following a distress call about an accident.

On arrival, responders found Bello lying by the roadside after he was knocked down by a vehicle that fled the scene immediately after the incident.

A preliminary assessment by LASEMA paramedics showed that the victim sustained severe injuries, including suspected fractures to both legs.

The agency initiated its medical response protocol and contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, to transfer the victim for treatment.

LASEMA responders, alongside the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, remained at the scene to ensure safety while response operations continued.

In a separate incident at about 4:20 p.m., the LRT Cobra Team stationed at Onipanu was dispatched to Palmgrove, inward Obanikoro, along Ikorodu Road, following a report of a truck incident.

The team arrived at the scene at 4:26 p.m. and found that an empty gas truck had rammed into the road median.

Preliminary findings indicated that a mechanical fault involving the truck’s braking system may have caused the driver to lose control while the vehicle was in motion.

“Fortunately, no loss of life was recorded in the incident,” the statement said.

Following the incident, the Cobra Team, working with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police Force, immediately put traffic control measures in place to protect other road users and prevent further accidents.

LASEMA also deployed its heavy-duty equipment, Super Metro, to support a private tow truck in removing the affected vehicle and restoring normal traffic conditions in the area.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the swift response and professionalism of the Lion and Cobra Teams, as well as the collaborating agencies involved in the two incidents.

He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment through continued investment in emergency response infrastructure, capacity building and the strategic positioning of response units for quick intervention.

Oke-Osanyintolu sympathised with the victim of the hit-and-run incident and urged motorists to obey traffic rules and carry out regular maintenance checks on their vehicles.

He also called on motorists to show responsibility and empathy towards other road users.
