Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has declared that Nigeria neither possesses nuclear weapons nor has ever pursued a nuclear weapons programme, reaffirming the country’s commitment to global efforts to eliminate nuclear-weapon testing.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly during the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session in New York, Ibrahim, who is also Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration, called for a review of Article 2(7) of the United Nations Charter.
He argued that the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of states should not prevent international action against countries that engage in nuclear-weapon testing or possess weapons of mass destruction.
The Nigerian envoy, who conveyed the position of President Bola Tinubu, said Nigeria maintains key institutions and regulatory mechanisms to monitor and address issues relating to weapons of mass destruction.
He identified the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission as one of the key institutions responsible for overseeing the country’s nuclear-related activities and regulatory framework.
According to Ibrahim, Nigeria collaborates with countries across the world, including Russia, China, France, South Korea and the United States, as part of its commitment to international cooperation.
He said President Tinubu had directed him to reaffirm Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen partnerships aimed at eliminating nuclear-weapon testing from the international system.
Ibrahim said Nigeria aligned itself with the statement delivered by the African Group and congratulated the international community on the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
Noting that Africa remains a nuclear-weapon-free zone and has rejected nuclear explosive testing across the continent, the Nigerian envoy urged UN member states to sustain efforts towards eliminating nuclear testing, saying such action was critical to making the world safer and free from the threat posed by nuclear weapons.
He also congratulated member states of the United Nations on the progress recorded over the past three decades in the global campaign against nuclear testing.
