Namibia’s biggest celebrities unite for clean-up day

Namibia’s entertainment industry is preparing to take its commitment to environmental action from the spotlight to the streets, with the Clean Up Namibia Celebrity Clean-Up Campaign set to take place on Saturday, 19 September, in commemoration of World Cleanup Day.

Led by award-winning Namibian performing artist and medical doctor La-Toya ‘Lioness’ Mwoombola-Hamutenya, the campaign will bring together some of Namibia’s most recognisable entertainers, public figures and community voices for a day of collective action at Okapale, Goreangab, in the Samora Machel constituency of Windhoek.

Among the celebrities confirmed to participate are Gazza, Lize Ehlers, Adriano Visagie, Page Ethnix, Scrypt, Maria N Amunyela, TopCheri and ML Music, with more personalities expected to join the campaign.

The initiative comes as Clean Up Namibia moves from its official launch phase into its first major public clean-up initiative.

The campaign’s official launch took place last month, bringing together partners, environmental stakeholders, community representatives and supporters around a shared vision of cleaner and prouder Namibian spaces.

Now, with the main clean-up day just days away, the focus shifts to action.

Founded by Mwoombola-Hamutenya, Clean Up Namibia is a public-facing environmental movement focused on civic pride, responsible waste practices, environmental awareness and visible community action.

The campaign deliberately places Namibia’s entertainment industry at the centre of the conversation, using the influence of celebrities and public figures to encourage communities to take greater ownership of their surroundings.

“This is about more than picking up litter.

“It is about dignity, pride and responsibility, and about how we care for the spaces that carry our lives,” Mwoombola-Hamutenya said at the campaign’s launch.

“Cleaner spaces are possible when we take collective ownership.”

The celebrity-led campaign is expected to see participating personalities step away from their usual stages and screens to work alongside residents, volunteers, partners and members of the community in cleaning and reclaiming public spaces.

The campaign has also secured support from several strategic stakeholders, including the City of Windhoek, the Khomas region’s governor’s office, the Namibia Tourism Board, Gondwana Collection Namibia, Plastic Packaging and Future Media.

Plastic Packaging has further committed practical support through the provision of refuse bags, recycling bags, gloves and other clean-up materials.

For Clean Up Namibia, however, 19 September is intended to be more than a single day of activity.

The campaign is being developed as a long-term national movement that promotes environmental education, youth participation, recycling awareness, public-private collaboration and lasting behavioural change.

The 19 September activation at Okapale, Goreangab, will serve as an important next step in turning that vision into visible community action, while demonstrating the power of Namibia’s public figures to use their platforms for social and environmental impact.

Clean Up Namibia is calling on corporates, public institutions, schools, environmental organisations, the media, community groups and members of the public to join the celebrity-led clean-up and become part of the movement towards a cleaner, healthier and more dignified Namibia.

Members of the public who would like to participate as volunteers in the Clean Up Namibia Celebrity Clean-Up Campaign are encouraged to sign up and join the movement.
