The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Asutifi District of the Ahafo Region has organised a free prostate cancer screening exercise for its male members as part of efforts to promote early detection and improve men’s health.
The exercise, conducted by Saint Elizabeth Hospital at Kenyasi, followed a health awareness march involving GNAT members and students of Ola Girls’ Senior High School through the principal streets of the community.
Speaking to Adom News, GNAT Chairman for Asutifi District, Reverend Joseph Arthur, said the association considered the screening necessary due to growing concerns among health professionals about the impact of prostate cancer on men.
He explained that the initiative was intended to help members know their health status and seek appropriate medical attention where necessary.
Reverend Arthur added that participants also received education from health professionals on the disease and measures to protect their health.
GNAT Chairman for Kenyasi, S. K. Mensah, said the initiative was important because teachers needed to be healthy to perform their duties effectively.
“We need our teachers to be healthy to teach,” he stated.
He commended the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) and Dr Asumeng for their continued support to the association.
Meanwhile, Medical Laboratory Scientist at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Isaac Sakyi Sarkodie, praised GNAT’s leadership for organising the exercise, describing screening as an important step towards protecting members against prostate cancer.
He encouraged men aged 30 and above to visit health facilities for medical advice and appropriate screening to support early detection and management of the disease.
